In my experience with trailers, light trailers like jet skis are 1 7/8" most utility trailers are 2" most deul axle trailers over 7000lb gvw (horse trailer) are 2 5/16" but the is no (standard) so manufactures can do what they want.

    gotcha gotcha.

    and actually i pulled a 2 horse trailer with my 92 s 10 and it had a 2 inch ball connection ;)

so I should be fine in that regard as if i ever borrow one it will be a smaller 2 horse trailer.

so i will look at his ball reciever later and see if i want it or just want a new one

here is the skinny, "almost" without exception any new trailer will have nothing smaller than a 2" ball no matter the size because they are standardizing them as a universal norm to avoid the two ball swapout issues people face.

smaller older trailers however still have the 1 7/8" balls hitches on them so it all depends on what you plan to pull.

if you just want to be ready to hook up to anything at random then the 2" ball will cover 95% of anything you come across.

I wouldn't buy a 1 7/8 ball unless I had a trailer that had a 1 7/8 hitch "welded" to it because its better to swap the hitch on the trailer to a 2" size then to have an extra 2" ball rolling around in the truck or having to flip one of those ugly 3 in 1 receivers over to the size you need.

one added note DO NOT BUY one of those with the ball that lifts off the pin so only the round ball gets swapped out. they are weaker and often the pin and ball will get stuck and not want to come off if you ever do need to swap it.

    do you mean like this?

this isn't the one I actually got from a guy at the job but its just like it just black and the ball and nut has some rust. For 10 bucks I figure its not bad but it didn't want to go in bout one inch and took a flathead screwdriver to see if any rust or flakes was caked up inside female end on the truck and it looked fine.

so wondering if it will even work. Might have to knock it in with something but ofcourse I'm asking you guys about it first.

also he had no pin for it but I think I have one that will work somewhere here at the house

ball and reciever that looks like mine.jpg

yea just noticed that the one I actually got from the guy today, it is the opposite of the pic I posted. The one I have has the ball in the rise position, though I guess you can swap the ball and flip it to where it would have the drop.

so hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. What to do what to do lol? I haven't even bought the trailer yet but will probably go by the place I am to get the trailer and see how it matches up with the one I got from the guy today

i'm not entirely sure i understand your question.
the receiver is the female part that mounts to the frame of your truck underneath that the ball and ball mount fit into. a 2" is the most common size for passenger vehicles i've seen. smaller than that are usually for atv's or yard equipment.
1 7/8" and 2" are the most common ball sizes i've used.
i don't know how far my hitch sinks into my receiver but i'd guess it goes about 4 inches in where i pin it
edit: a couple of replies above me is a perfect description of the parts that make up a trailer hitch assembly and the rating system for the weight being pulled

^this. buy your trailer then buy the ball to go with it. and for clarification the receiver is a 2" square the "ball" can be 1-7/8 (my new trailer last year had this), 2, or 2-5/16

lighter utility trailers tend to come with the smaller cause they are cheaper and can handle the weight. I towed about 2k lbs to Florida and back without a problem (heck even got 16 mpg doing 70 on the way back :) )

ok it appears the part I am referring to is called the shank. The shank that I have , which has the ball on it ofcourse, the shank would only go about an inch into the square hole of the receiver.

mostly everyone refers to the frame-mounted part as the "hitch" and that's kind of what i went off of as well.

and ya for $20 it's basically the same price as new. for that I'd keep two (one for each ball size, IF you have two different ones) so that you can just swap them out easier.

why would the shank only go into the reciever about 1 inch?

I took a flathead to see if maybe there was some crud or something inside the reciever but apparently there was none

it should go in all the way so either the receiver or the hitch has something blocking it.

use a flashlight and look inside the one the shank slides into for something blocking it on all 4 sides, if you see nothing then make sure its clean and spray some fresh paint on the end of square tube shank (the one with the ball attached) then shove it in with your hand and pull it out and you should see a spot of missing paint where its touching and you know where something is blocking it, if not shove it in a little harder until you see where its hitting.

and are you sure its smooth flat and level surfaces inside the receiver? make sure someone hasn't slid a reducer inside it to use smaller hitch shanks
