2016 has rear drum brakes...

They cost me a lot of time and money.

Just last year we had a truck with drum brakes that the spring rusted and broke locking the shoe and overheating the brakes on a fishing trip to the coast.
We were fishing OBX and it screwed the better part of two days.
Had to jack it in place remove the parts and remount the tire in about 1 foot of powder sand the limp back to camp order parts on the web and have someone on the mainland pick them up and drop on the ferry to get to us.


Dont get me wrong.
I like the Taco
As a car/SUV to drive around town and too work.
It is great. On the road not loaded..... other than the low MPG and small tank.

what it is not.... it is not a truck.

It is a very common thing in heavy sand. The drums fill up and screw up the pads and rust the parts bad and fast.

Same thing on other trucks in the past offroading and in the sand.

when I went to disk no more problems.
got a.10.year newer truck and guess what it has drums.... what a step back.
Same problems. Mine were.done the first time at 34k miles... full of dust from mud and sand from the area I hunt. And this truck has never been on the beach...

 

That is messed up....

WTF yours had rear discs. 2013 TURD had rear disks.... and they went back to drum for 2016.....

FIND just one post I made that stated the drums don't work or are not good enough....

You will not find one... it is just fact.... drums are outdated and suck.......

Enjoy your Colorado MrGadget. I love my Ram 2500 and Tacoma, they are both trucks though I use them for very different roles. If you think that a Colorado is going to be more of a truck than a Tacoma .

I had a 2500 4d CTD LB 4x4
it was a great truck went over 150k with only oil changes and fuel filters
Never let me down or any real problems other than changing the ball joints that I did.
I messed up my back bad and was having problems climbing up In it and it had a 6 speed so that was killing my back.

So I wanted to try what a bunch of guys had at work.
wife had one I got a year earlier for her and I liked it for getting around. She wanted that and not a SUV.
Going on tow spec and haul I never tried to tow with hers.
I said if they say it will tow 6000 to 6500 so what the heck I will get one.

I found wrong.
It does not tow good at all and will not hold speed....
Paid 32 to 34k for it and ask about trade after it was in the shop for several problems at about 36k miles. They offered me 13k for it on trade to a tundra and would only come off 1000 on a 36k$ TUNDRA.
what a joke for a 2 year old truck... that is holding its value....

My Ram was in the 32k $ out the door and it almost 10 years old 150k miles and got 18k $

Going to look another ram this fall on sale before I run out of warranty when they run deals.

 

It will be... I has a Diesel....


BTW never said I was going to buy one...
just that I'm not a fanboy and not going to bash it with out trying one and testing one.
Why not drive one for a weekend if they give it to me....?

Fair enough. The Cummins is rock solid. The rest of a Ram truck is suspicious in my experience to say the least.

You already had a Tacoma and you didn't try driving your wifes for a week... That sounds like bad decision making. You can never tow the full tow rating of a truck and expect it not to struggle up hills, struggle off the line, etc. This is why I don't think you're thinking critically when you suggest you're going to buy a Colorado and be happy... The Colorado is still a midsized truck with a higher unloaded weight and similar torque output. It will struggle just like your Tacoma.

If you got a brand new Cummins Ram for 32K you are a god sir. That's a hell of a price. I think your Toyota dealer sucks balls lol. Personally I'd encourage you to take a look at an F150. They are far more powerful trucks and in our business fleet they have held up much better than the Ram.

Oh, and I hope you are towing with your Tacoma in 4. If you tow in D that would explain why you hate the truck so much. Most trucks can't hold O/D with a load. It's bad on the transmission to do that too.

It was a good thread. It was thoughtful, had personal mainly unbiased experiences, and reminded me of all kinds of things I had forgotten about in mountain biking and automobiles.

 

nothing wrong with drums.how many of you guys had to buy E brake shoes for rear disc brakes on a truck? cost more for them, then the disc brakes themselves. my other truck cost me over $100.00 for just the rear, that's for the rear disc and the E brake shoes inside the hat.

 

I ran more then 150k and never needed them.
Pads or shoes for the E brake.
the only way to wear out the E brake shoes is to drive with the E brake on.
If you don't do that they last just fine.

Most the time they are more open to not trap sand and dirt. Mine were.
You can see the rotors and pads no reason to replace the rotor if you maintain the truck.

 

Like I said I screwed up

I drove her truck a bunch. Liked it.
but I never loaded or towed with it.
to tow with it I would have taken it for a long weekend or week hunting and she had a knee problem and could not get in or out of mine and drive a stick.
Her knee was cut on like 4 times. That was the reason we got her truck.
It was an auto and easy for her to get in and out along with carry the labs.


The Ram CTD was a new 03 and I ordered it.
I may still have the bill of sale.


BTW it is all in the trans and gearing..
that being changed the taco could be better...
But the lack of upgrades they did for an all new truck has me looking something else.

More than likely Will be full size.

but no way would I think I would need to worry and not maintain speed with a truck towing 1/3 of its rated weight.


My ram loaded to the max 10 truck and 10k trailer had no problem towing the mountians in NC VA WV
and so on. I was able to run speed posted in most all cases if I did not get blocked on the hills to slow down.
Same hills and the taco with a 2k trailer running hard will only run 50 to 55 on a 70mph interstate.

And for Toyota corp and a few dealers to joke about it and say I need a full size truck to tow 2k and the taco was over loaded and not designed for towing.....

They just lost me. And to low ball me on a trade up is just BS.

Not even looking to do anything yet but did check a few dealers. They offered 5 to 8 k more abd had 3 to 9k rebates on the trucks..

 

Let me also add.


After adding stuff I needed, bags, power outlet, and little things my big problem is this....
I can only run 200 miles towing... I waste so much time stopping on hunting trips for fuel and so on.
If it did not sound like the motor was being run to death and I could get a larger tank I would deal with the rest.

In the past on the CTD I could fill up on my way home from work Thursday.
head to hunt camp, hunt all weekend and run around and head home Sunday.
I woukd still had fuel to go to work on monday and would fill up on the way home.

Now I fill up Thursday hit the road friday, as soon as I get there look fuel.
hunt the weekend and fill up on sumday before I head home and when I get home fill up so I have fuel to get to work on Monday.
Not that I used the full tanks but I would not have enough to get out of the sticks or good areas to stop.
just a waste of time..


I think another 5 gal would go a long way. Or getting better mpg like 15 to 18 and not 10 +-
