That's what I was thinking on the triangulation, plus it's this triangulation that gives the expedition racks that cool look to me. So, if I added some in, it would have the look and some added strength. Since you have the experience, is it really worth the extra money for abs? Or should I just beef up the schedule 40 a bit. I've seen a lot of racks made pour of this stuff online, just not really the design I'm looking for. As far as mounting, my plan was to attach it to the bed rail system somehow, and then add a couple of support pillars of I ever put my kayak on it.

If, IF you insist on plastic then abs or sch80 are your best bets. Then your getting into real money for fittings and pipe. I saw a coupon in one of my 4 wheel mags for a harbor freight 170 amp welder for $165, that's at least what your going to have in pipe and fittings. Pipe is made for stuff to go through it, not hold stuff up. Just saying so the worst case scenario doesn't happen.

If I knew how to weld none of this would be issue, haha. That's one of the things on my to do list, it just keeps getting pushed back.

Don't mean to be a party pooper, might work just fine, last forever. WTF do I know, I'm a plumber damn it, not a doctor. In my best doctor McCoy voice.

I hate to nit pick, but I think the "rack" in your link cost $376. The site says: "Sold in 1/2 sets - single set can combine with towers on truck roof or an additional Outdoorsman". So you gotta buy 2 to hold anything like a kayak or buy a roof rack. Or did I miss-read something?

Anyway....looking forward to pics of the ABS/PVC kayak carrier. :)

Thanks for all the awesome input! I'm thinking now I may just make this thing from unistrut. After doing a lot of research, it looks like I should be able to do it fairly cheap, and if it's done right I could haul pretty much anything I need on it. Plus, it still has that cool, industrial look I'm going for.

Unistrut is great stuff. Can get it in stainless and all sorts of different sizes.

Yeah, it looks like a much better option, plus the fact that I know a fire sprinkler guy and he has this stuff left over after every job, I should be able to piece it together from his scraps. I've priced the fasteners so far, and I'm looking somewhere in the $100 range if I can get the actual strut from him. Should be no more than $175 if I have to buy it.

I've hung some big pipe off of unistrut. It will be strong and very industrial looking.
