Are the upgrades (?) in the 2016, plus the anticipated price increase, worth the postponement of purchasing a late (summer) 2015 model and going with the Fall release of the 2016?

I would wait until the specs are out on the 2016 to make a decision. For me, there are still too many unknowns.

MPG is a big question mark. Just wait. Chicago show is on Feb 14th.

The Auto Show will be in Worcester Massachusetts on the 24th and 25th of January. Maybe they will have the Tacoma there and I can get some underneath pics, interior pics, engine pics and such.

No one knows enough details about the 2016 yet, and the "right" answer for one person will be different from the "right" answer for another.

It isn't at all clear there will be much of a price increase, the Colorado/Canyon competition has to be considered in the pricing. On the other hand according to a dealer I'm working with at the moment all 2015 Tacoma builds after 1/31 are going to see a $200 increase in MSRP actually - so minor increase on the current model already.

Will there be incentives on clearing the 2015 models at the end of the summer? Probably we can guess no one is getting a deal on the very first 2016s out of the factory.

Personally I think I'd be happy with either one. At the moment I need to purchase before the 2016 will likely be available so I'm planning on a 2015. I don't particularly care about the interior upgrades (vehicle is for camping only) nor MPG (again, it isn't a DD). Any disappointment I might feel five years from now could be mitigated by all the problems people are going to have with their first model year 3rd gens (tongue in cheek) :) More seriously since I plan on modding various parts of the truck right from the get go I think I'll be happier dealing with a 2nd gen that has plenty of aftermarket options available not to mention a huge knowledge database here on TW. With a 3rd gen I'd be figuring out a lot of that stuff myself. The point is, this is all very dependent on the situation - for my situation the 2015 makes more sense. For other people the opposite.

If you are not planning on ordering one, it might be beneficial to wait till the '16's hit the lot and test drive both. If you don't think the '16 is leaps and bounds better than the '15 you may be able to get a good deal on the '15.

Personally I would give them a year, or two, to ensure that the 3.5L Atkinson cycle engine and mgmt is solid and a good fit for a truck engine before I would buy.

Obviously it's Superman, Dogs, Coke, and Can't Stand. Anyone else that thinks otherwise is a Ridgeline driving moron!

Are the amenities and features offered in the 2016 valuable and useful to you?

If the 2015 does everything you need out of the truck, just buy it.

Ford released specs on the new F-150 only a couple of weeks before they started arriving at dealer lots. They do that for a reason. Mainly so competitors don't find out (Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline etc).
Toyota doesn't want them to be one up'd right before they release their mid-size trucks. So, don't hold your breath. Could be summer before we know.

I'm on the fence here as well. I was thinking I wanted to replace my 2007 this year before I even realized there was a new gen coming out. I'm leaning toward the 2015 though.

I don't want the first year of a new engine and redesign, but I don't want to wait a couple more years either.

Anyway what are the major advancements of the 2016? Better fuel efficiency would be really nice, but I've lived with my 2007, I could live with a 2015 for a while. I like that they went with a 6spd in the auto, but most are satisfied with their 5spd autos right? My 2007 is a 6spd manual. The interior looks nice, but it's fine in the 2nd gens too.

    They're using an existing engine.
