You would think so but unfortunately that not the way it works on our trucks. At 5 mph with ABS the truck takes forever to stop. Pull the fuse at the truck will stop almost immediately. Don't believe me then try it for yourself.

YEs you can steer more more ties than not there's no where to steer to and you simply need to stop.

It's a system designed to do a certain thing.

Honestly?? (no offense but...) You're going 5mph. What's the worst that could happen? An insurance claim and maybe an airbag in the face - if that. Who cares!!??? Not life threatening....

Disabling ABS because you don't like the way it works at 5mph...... What do you think will happen at 50mph when you WISHED you hadn't disabled it?? Without the system enabled - you could kill yourself and other people. What about your family? Your kids? Other people and their families and kids?

not 5 mins ago i purposely slammed on my brakes before a stop sign to test the "abs". Right now it is snowing heavily and the roads are bad. guess what, it stopped just fine, just like every other time.

ABS is a system that relieves then driver from understanding or employing threshold breaking techniques during an emergency. No federal law requires passenger vehicles to be equipped with ABS. In fact, the only reason it's on vehicles today is for marketing reasons.

    OK.

Honestly ... I told myself I'd stay out of this, but Janster has inspired me. I understand exactly what folks are talking about with the oversensitivity of the ABS systems on these trucks; I live in Alaska and discovered the ABS issue first Winter owning my truck. It is different from the cars I've driven here...I don't have any other truck experience here, so I guess I wrongly assumed it was the difference in a truck system ABS versus car; i.e. different suspensions etc. So here's what I do:

    1) Below 5 mph downslope conditions on ice: my buddy lives on a private drive with a 35% grade; we carpool for work, so I've done this many times on pure ice in freezing rain. That is pure 1st gear in 4LO -- literally a tractor style creep with little, if any, throttle input. Braking is a very light feathering to stop.

    2) Coming up to iced up intersections (stop signs/red lights/what have you): set your stopping point goal a few (as in 3) car links away from the actual intersection and gear down to the same almost tractor style creep well ahead of the intersection, then again literally slowly creep up to the intersection.

And my Blizzaks help immensely in these conditions + a very large dose of patience is indeed very much required.

    Ok -- Unsub'd.

What's the worst that could happen? Well… the situation that causes me to lose sleep is this: Approaching an stop light at an appropriate speed, just before reaching a stop the ABS decides instead we shall enter the intersection, and I get T-boned by someone at high speed.

I had a 4-Runner that would engage the ABS (on all wheels) when I was 40 feet from the intersection if two of the wheels found some snow and lost traction, even though the other two wheels on dry pavement would have provided plenty of grip to stop. Found myself in the middle of intersections a few times; luckily no one else was there to T-bone me. When you expect the two tires on dry to slow you but they don't because of ABS, it's alarming.

30 years experience driving in snow. I run snow tires, I have a decent understanding of grip and what the vehicle is capable of doing in snow without ABS. Its when the ABS engages that my experience goes out the window because the vehicle doesn't react the way I expect. Subaru - no problem. 2000 Tacoma without ABS - no problem. 4Runner with ABS - downright frightening. Lexus RX300 with ABS - somewhat scary. 2015 Tacoma - not waiting to find out, first mod was the ABS kill switch (thanks for that, BTW). My own tests with/without ABS on the 2015 Tacoma satisfy me that at slow speeds the truck stops faster in snow without ABS.

I've never driven a vehicle with such sensitive ABS as my Tacoma. I found this thread after recently purchasing my Tacoma ABS came on last night for well over 100' with only very slight pressure on the brake pedal. I was driving a busy stretch of farm road near a subdivision with compacted wind blown snow in the road. Being on crusted snow with an upcoming stop I attempted to gradually slow down which triggered the ABS as soon as I touched the pedal. It seemed so overly sensitive and ineffective that I thought that it was possibly defective. Maybe it's a Tacoma thing? It seems like a great truck but I have never had ABS come on with so little brake pressure or stay engaged for such a long duration.

I've worked construction, mining, aviation, petty much everything at one time or another.
You know, whenever someone says "They sure don't build them (or do whatever) like they used to."
I think, "And thank goodness." :p

I mean I sure miss tires good for 5000 miles, 1950's suspension, etc..

    Don't get me wrong.
I truly dig and admire all sorts of old machinery.

I loved my '62 Impala I used to have...~:eek:40 yrs ago
But I wouldn't want to make it my current daily driver for my 120+ mile daily commute.

I'm new to the forum but not new to cars or forums. I owned 3 Subarus ('06 2.5i, '00 2.5RS and I still have a '992.5RS) before pulling the trigger and getting my Tacoma. I had disabled the ABS in all three Subies and have done so in the Taco as well.

Before owning the Tacoma I did a good amount of Rally-x's, and am currently on my 3rd season as a crewmember in the Rally America Series in which I routinely discuss car setup with all of my teams drivers. Once you learn how to properly maintain control over a vehicle without driver aids such as TCS and ABS, you can easily out preform those systems. And having those skills at your disposal makes these systems a severe handicap.

If you have enough momentum that you're sliding into the middle of an intersection (while braking AND while ABS is pulsating) - you're going too fast for conditions.

If you're worried about someone T-boning you "at High Speed" - THEY'RE GOING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS!
