Sway bar info: Good or Bad? Lifesaving or off-road limiting

Don't think I would with the stock springs. If you had gotten higher rated springs, I would consider it. Just MHO..

 

I haven't had mine since the second day I have had my new truck but my old one I only took off once I had my icons put in. And I definitely cannot put it back on now thats for sure.

 

I took mine off even when I only had stock suspension. Felt fine. a little more body roll but if you drive it like a truck and not like a porsche, you'll be fine.

 

Unfortunately I drive my truck on the road like my car. I'll leave it alone until i feel i need the extra flex.

 

I relocated mine. Like the way it handles with it on, even with my upgrades. May take it off for the "serious" trip, we will see.

 

I ended up removing it when I installed the 5100's. To be honest I had some stuff happen right after the install and before I could drive it. Once I actually drove it I had forgotten it wasn't there, didn't really feel that different. It does take single wheel bumps / pot holes MUCHO better

More my style

 

Nothing much really, just a pair of relocation brackets that move the bar mounts to the frame forward about 4cm or so. Gets the links out of the way when lifted.

I tried removing my bar. There was an immediate change to the way the truck handles. My truck sees pavement 95% of the time, & I didn't like it. For me not for a day trip, but my next long weekend offroad I may do it again. Removing the bar is easy, but add the skid plate and any armor and It can become a real PITA.

I'm still trolling all the disconnect ideas.

 

Take it off and the chances are nothing bad will happen and the truck will perform much better off road. And if you are involved in an accident involving serious injury or death the chances are nobody will ever notice that it's missing. But if they do, regardless of fault, the chances are that an aggressive lawyer and/or prosecuter and/or insurance company will work overtime to screw you. Best of luck with that.

I really wish somebody smarter than me would hurry up and invent a disconnect.

 

FYI.

I just did some canyon running this weekend in the truck.... roads i would typically take the street bike on, but the foot is broken so i went for a drive. These are world class street bike riding roads here in the santamonica mountians here in CA... some tight twisty crazy roads.

No swaybar, 5100's set at 1.75 stock TRD OR coils, rear 2in AAL and 265/75R16 hankook ATM RF10's ... Never once was i like OH GOD ITS GOING TO ROLL, even driving rather aggressively. Probably got about 5mpg for half a tank.

Its due to this reason no one has made a disconnect... take the fucker off, and leave it off you will never want it back on again.... driving just in the street is so much better, going up driveways at an angle, speed bumps at an angle any type of pot hole etc sooo much smoother.

 

My Billies are at 1.75, but my springs aren't OR. I've been thinking about removing the sway bar for awhile. In the spring and fall I tow my camper a fair amount on windy mountain roads. I'm concerned about handling when I tow. Anyone have experience with this? I'm off work today and the sun is out, so there's a good chance it's coming off. I figured I'd ask, though.

Edit: Took it off. We'll see how it goes.

 

Reading this thread I was just thinking the same thing. I feel that even with stock suspension I would rather loose the sway bars. But, a couple of times a year I take my 26ft airstream on a road trip. That is no bueno with no sway bars... I think I need all the sway control I can get with my trailer.

 

buddy tows his trailer on his taco (21ft toy hauler loaded up) with no swaybar with out issue... just dont tow stupid fast and use a proper weight distribution hitch.

 

Sway bar is up front.
Towing without it would make no difference.

Proper hitch would make all the difference.

 

Well maybe I will give it a shot then. I use a Reese weight dist. sway control hitch.

 

Little 1958 camper here. My weight "distribution" comes from Firestone Ride Rite airbags.

Edit: The truck does ride a little more smoothly over potholes and bumps, but otherwise I don't notice any difference. Hoping the extra flex is noticeable off road.
