Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

The home was resided in vinyl this past year and got wrapped and sheeted by 3/4" Styrofoam. I have yet to find one true square corner or level floor haha

Yup, the main house was built in 1834, with a couple small additions in 1904! We did lift the roof on the back of the house last year, and rebuilt the back wall! So, the back of the house is insulated! All new heating(forced air, LP), plumbing, and about 85% new electric by us when we bought the house 13 years ago!

Minimal plumb, square, level here too!

I cut 20 + cords of wood for personal use, my parents, a campground business, and firewood sales. Fortunately a relative donated these cull decks to me which are only two miles from the house. Gotta love it when wood flows like gravy.

 

Exterior foam sheathing is awesome

 

The company I work for used it on the exterior of several of our newest 20+ million dollar luxury hotels. Easy to form, easy to fix and a great added layer of insulation.

 

Form ? You talking about ICF's ?

 

I don't think so. ICF for forming concrete? I didn't do the construction just watched it go up. Our construction is mainly steel beam and concrete. The styrofoam was added to the exterior, formed to shape with hand saws, and stucco overlaid then pained.

 

Oh , that kind of forming , yeah it's used a lot as a substrate for stucco . In my case it's got a cedar board and batten siding finish

One of our hotels decided to convert to gas this year, after 3 chimney fires in 5 years. We got a nice one though

Chimney fires usually are s product of poor maintenance and wet wood

 

We were going through 8 cord a winter, burning almost around the clock. We did a professional chimney sweep twice a year. The wood though, was often delivered green, and the little usable wood that came was wet from rain or pine. I tried to make them understand that we need to buy in the spring and cure it instead of buying in the fall, but they don't listen too much.

Agreed. I also felt that the 12" residential stove pipe they were using was a joke, particularly for the commercial application. The building is 4 stories and I believe the creosote buildup was compounded by this long run of narrow pipe. When I told them to go commercial, they went gas. Go figure

 

12" pipe is huge for a single appliance unless the fireplace is really big . My chimney uses 8" flue and is 40' tall with 35' of draft with the basement woodstove and 25' of draft on the main floor
