Mine hangs on a whole lot more, when not in cruise, before dropping down a gear. In cruise, kinda same as before, will drop drop fairly readily...

since this also applies to manual transmissions, those updates must be pure vvti and timing only (of course).

the bonus with auto is they do that and also modify torque converter lockup

To those who have been following... I took my truck back to my Toyota dealership and they essentially told me to pound sand. The tech said they could not duplicate the pinging and that a little bit of pinging was normal. They then tried to sell me some bull bs "High pressure fuel system flush" for $279. I'm fairly pissed off to say the least. What sort of actions should I be looking to take? I'm not going to settle for "it's normal" when everyone with half a brain knows it isn't. A three year old truck with 42,000 miles should NOT be pinging.

Is this pinging the same thing as the engine tick noise?

No, this is a very discernible ping from pre detonation of fuel. My truck has the notorious "taco tick" too but that is in fact a normal engine noise, pre detonation of fuel is not normal.

I guess Toyota covers their butt by stating in the manual that some pinging is considered normal. From online research a bunch of new cars also ping. If you search Subaru Crosstrek you see a bunch of pinging complaints.

Somebody else said the same thing earlier, I'm assuming they probably have a lot of these new engines running very lean to comply with emissions standards and I believe mean fuel air mixtures cause pinging?

You just gotta find the right dealer... Took me 4 tries to find a dealer who knew what I was talking about.

This is correct. It helps to have the printed TSB on my original post #1 in this thread when you drop the truck off for service. Show it to the service writer. If he ignores the printed copy of the Toyota TSB, move on to the next dealer.

My problem though is that the TSB was already done and yet my truck still pings. Where to go from there?

dont know what to tell you sir.

By the way i wanted to verify that Simi Valley toyota DID IN FACT reflash the ecu. (verified by the calibration ID in reference to the tsb itself)

I verified this by way of a techstream cable and techstream software (same shit toyota has)

    Untitled.jpg

Also verified that yup... seatbelt buzzers on or off can be customized (had already turned these off via blutooth and a telnet terminal)
    Untitled2.jpg

BTW.... did you want to know exact wheel pressure and temperature... NO PROBLEM

^^ Sweet! Now can you elaborate on "had already turned these off via blutooth and a telnet terminal"? I assume it's not that easy and I need special hardware/software to do this?

a bluetooth OBDII adapter (like elm327)

and a laptop with bluetooth and terminal software to open COM port
on bluetooth. putty can do it.

    fairly simple.

some phones can do bluetooth com port as well

    None yet. Soon to come.
    Subd to read later.

my 2012 V6 started making this noise when I accelerate outside of a comfortable torque rpm range. I'll be reading this in its entirety but sounds like pinging.

    edit:

I have a 2012 manual tranny and it definitely pings if I try and accelerate uphill (especially if I don't downshift) with the a/c on and on a hot day. It happened a few times, but I didn't really pay attention until more recently when I was like "wait a minute...this aint right."

I live literally half a block from Santee Toyota Dealer, so I am gonna swing by there on my way home today or tomorrow and see what they say but TSB seems like what I want!

Just got home from the dealership. Gotta say, Toyota service center of Santee, CA rocked. I brought in the tsb and just told me what issue I was having and that I wanted it done. Took my keys and told me to have a seat. 30 min later I had my truck back. Felt smoother on the 30 second drive home but I'll update that more as I drive it. No under hood sticker but tsb complete. Easy day.
