Goodbye Driveline Vibration

Might still be hit and miss with the 2015's.
I'm looking at getting a 2016 in the fall, so went and test drove some 2015's last week to get a better idea of how it would compare to my current vehicle. First truck I hopped in with the sales guy had terrible vibration. So bad that we decided something was wrong before even getting out of the parking lot. Hopped in another one and there was no indication of vibration. Both 2015 TRD Sports, DCLB, Auto.

 

If you want a car go buy one.

These are trucks and you will always have some vibration and shakes.
that is just part of owning a truck larger tires and a solid axle.

Deal with it or get over it and move on.

 

My point is.
I own two trucks.
both no problems running in the factory specs.
Added larger tires and all types of problems on one. Changed the wheels and tires between the two and the other truck has the problem now.

A lot of the problems can be found in running the larger tires and aftermarket rims or lift.

Would be cool to know how many stock trucks running the 245 16 tires had the problem.
mine going to 265 started.
Was able to fix it with balance and upping the air.


And this being in the 2016 3rd-gen-tacomas section yet no one has driven it.
People are talking about somthing that no one has a clue about.

see everyone here thinks that I hate these trucks.
I own two.
my wife loves the one she has ans has ststed many a times it is the best thing she has ever driven.
I really like mine for day to day traveling.
Yet I have major problems with the truck for some things I think it should do...

Just lime the people that have the hate for the truck due to the vib, rust, and so on....

Had many Toyota trucks & cars in the past and had bad vibes in 2 of them. Maybe a 2000 or 2001 Tunda (can't remember exact model years) and it was a front end & wheel problem that Toyota fixed in an afternoon and truck was perfect after the fix.

The last problem that was VERY hard to find and/or duplicate at the dealer, but I kinda knew what the problem was ... had a 2012 TRD 4x4 and a certain speeds and certain accelerations ... it felt like a "high powered magic fingers bed" (remember those ? ) under my floor board and seat.

I kinda figured that driveline angles exacerbated the 2 other small issues that Toyota had at the time. Knew it was fruitless & time consuming (many dealer trips for them to say "wut, it's ok to me") to get it fixed (some others had better success in minimizing it) and did not want to go the "lemon law route". So I traded it (and tried a Honda Ridgeline 4x4 AWD for fun) and will probably not buy any more true 4x4s (mainly because I don't need a true 4x4 too).

Looking at a 2016 or 2017 TRD 4x2 at this point. I love Tacomas and just hope that Toyota can get this 2016 Gen-3 "fairly bug free" for a first model year.

PS I admire those guys who had the ability to figure out this ongoing vibration problem, experiment and fix it on their own.

 

Not really true. I owned a Silverado(short box w/1-piece shaft) 4x4 for 11 years, changed wheels/tires a few times, right up to 33x12.50's, and never once had a "driveline vibe". Unfortunately, I cant say the same for my '14 Taco with 265/75/16's...

 

Sounds like some of the other builders make some good trucks.

 

At least ones that don't experience organ rejection when you change out the tires...

 

Hrmm this concerns me as I'm still stuck between picking up a 2015 in a couple months (and having extra money for mods) or waiting and picking up a 2016. If this is already a TSB why wouldn't Toyota have fixed the 2015's before shipping them out of the factory?

 

Nice to hear. So a dinner is included in the warranty? Sweers sounds confident about the truck. 26 gallon gas tank would be nice also, Sweers.

Just a note thanking you for the response and to give you an update. I just pulled my cover and was going to make the tie wrap fix but apparently Toyota beat me to that one on the 15 model. There is a nylon looking bushing in there and no possible way to feed a tie wrap down beside it. Its snug as can be. My minor clunk on gravel roads must be something else?

 

Grab on each side of the knuckle and try to work it side to side... if you see any play in the joint, then put in some zip ties as suggested. Mine appeared tight on my '13 but rattled on dirt roads. The dealer acknowledged the problem, but wouldn't fix it since the TSB only covered up to '12. Needless to say I was a little grumpy to have to crawl under the dash and zip tie something together on a new truck.

 

Fwiw to note I had to do the zip tie gig on my new f150 fx4. 50k+ worth truck so it's not isolated to Tacomas....

That may be a possibility as well. Also, there did not appear to be enough room to get a zip tie through on mine as well, although I probably did not have the bushing you are referencing? I had to work a mini zip tie in there and when I finally got it in, it was long enough to complete the loop and tie it off. Can you get a picture of your setup? Curious to see what Toyota changed.

 

Is that a known fix for the F150 or were you just giving it a shot? Sad that this affects more than one brand and the fix is the same. At least you can say it is a Ford like you expected it or something?

 

I was going to bitch to the dealer about the steering clunk.... Then I took 10 min to properly do the zip tie mod and haven't had a clunk since.

 

Naw not really known but the same described feeling came in around 8k miles. From what I knew of being done on Tacos I simply applied it to the column of my work truck the F-150 is all. I've mentioned this to the local dealer and when can time I'll take it in. I know of a few others same work truck experiencing same.
