    What do you think about the K&N air filter?

    It says that it's high volume, can anyone confirm this?

    Is it worth the $40 or should I not waste my time and money.




    Mod-wise i would like to get a high flow muffler and do a cat back install, but money will not allow ATM. And the Cold Air Intakes for this truck seem VERY expensive, for not getting much...

    If you are running a stock intake, it is better than stock. Must agree though, I prefer AFE.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Better, as in it will flow a little more air, but it lets MUCH more dirt into the engine.

    I have never heard of K&N letting any dirt into the engine. I have had them on 2 trucks.

    My brother runs a cummins turbo diesel with K&N filters (higher suction than normal aspirated engines) and has no issues for 40,000 miles.

    Where did you hear it doesn't filter dirt??

    Im just not willing to pay $400 for a filter and a piece of tubing on a cold air intake. I had a car, I know what a cold air intake should do and the ones that are being sold as a cold air intake are not even close to that.

    If you look at the design of the stock air box, its practically the same thing just the filter is not on the end of the hose like they are on the CAI.

    The AFE sound nice but it's $60! that seems expensive for a filter to me...plus I have never heard of AFE so that makes me a little worried.

    google AFE and read the reviews...NO OIL and the last forever.

    I just use dish soap and warm water. I clean mine every 6 months. I let it sit outside to dry for about 30 mins - plenty of time in this Tucson weather.

    Ok I'm interested, where abouts in the US does this person drive? Is he around much mud and dirt or is it normal levels?

    Plus we aren't really comparing apples to apples here, if his diesel sucks more air harder.

    I should have me a copy & paste button for this.
    I've had K&N's and enjoy them with no issues.
    Cleaned them regularly (every 6 months). Never over oiled it (follow instructions on cleaning kit)
    Had a spare paper filter to use to allow the K&N to dry fully before oiling.

    All my oil sample I have done with K&N, and other gause type filters have had VERY high Silica levels show in the oil. Silica = Dirt.

    Im in Arizona. Regular driving, with a little off road. No diesel engine in my Tacoma, however, I have had samples from our Dodge Cummins, and the samples reflected the same I had with my Tacoma when a K&N was used.

    And have you had better results with whatever filter you are using now?
    What filter do you have now and did you test with the stock filter in?

    Sorry for the million questions, I just want to do it right...

    My best oil sample have been had with the OEM filter, which is what I run now. In all the tests I have done, I have only seen a max gain with a TRD intake, and an URD intake. And only a few HP at that. When driving, your engines pumping efficiency is more affected by the throttle plate, than any air filter, and I have found, the OEM filter flows quite well.

    ok the throttle plate, what exactly is that? Should I be cleaning it? I'm just trying to make sure I get all the performance and MPG out of this engine that I should...

    The throttle plate is in the throttle body. No need to worry about cleaning it for many many thousands of miles. Honestly, Many people have been using K&N filters for a long time with no issues. Janster has, and has never had trouble with Her engines she has used them on. Alot of it, I feel, depends on where you live. I live in a dust bowl, with very little rain.

    I cleaned my throttle body at 27K miles and found an increase in gas mileage. However I did it when I switched all fluids to synthetic so I have no idea what to attribute the gain to
