I see you too have a 1st gen. That's why we stick by Toyota. 11 years later, and only the basics for me. I do need a new set of wiper blades.

Two of my coworkers have Wranglers, one is a 2012 unlimited Sahara, the other a 2013 trail rated Sahara. Both have had the engine casting sand issue, one (2012) in the middle of the prairie winter when it's -25C daily high and no heater at all. Their standard warranty would not cover the claim at all, Chrysler Canada effectively shrugged and said "your problem". Luckily for him (the 2012) he had the extended, to the nines coverage and managed to get his dealer to fix it at the cost of 3 weeks in the shop and a whole new front end to the engine. The other (2013) ended up selling his before it got out of the Indian summer here, kinda felt bad for the new owner though, not a pleasant surprise when the mercury drops to find out your heater dosent do pretty shite all.

At the time I already had my Taco, but as a warning to all others I tell them to stay away from Jeeps if they are planning to do anything more than dedicated off roading in them. Chrysler seems refute to solve the reliability and quality issues that have plagued all of their products in one way or another for decades now, and while Toyota may not always be the most refined or comfortable, both will get you there, but the Toyota will always get you home.

    Just my .02 :D

All day. I have had no issues with any of the many Jeeps I have owned. If you review, my statement was directed to the off road road capability off the lot.

Very much the truth. I had a tough decision to make between another Jeep or another Tacoma last Oct.. I could of easily gone either way.

One coworker has a 2013 that had to have the head gasket replaced with 26k miles on the O.

Another coworker has a 2010 that had the engine replaced because a crankshaft bearing went out. Only 60k miles on the O. Dealership told him it was a known issue with a batch of 8000 bad bearings put in various motors. No TSB, no nothing, just wait until they fail. Maybe it is still under warranty, maybe it isn't.

I had the carrier bearings go out in the Chrysler 8.25" on my XJ with only 75k miles on the O. Also had to have the transfer case chain replaced because it stretched on the NP231. The gear shift knob broke in half twice. Dealership finally clued me in that the AX-5 was undersized and heated up too much, traveling up the shifter, causing the phenolic to expand and contract enough to crack itself. There were many design choices that royally ticked me off or left me perplexed. Don't get me started on the top 2 bell housing bolts... Oh, and why did I have to pay $300 per kit for tow hooks on an "off-road" vehicle?

Don't think I haven't been secretly surfing the for sale ads for the last of a stout breed.

Quite possible since many newer Jeep owners just like to cruise around with the top off. Tacomas don't have the corner on the mallcrawling market.

That's why I pay little attention to anyone's one or two vehicles... and use information gathered from professional organizations such as consumer reports, polk, etc. to understand that the overall quality of Jeeps is very poor - that and from mechanics I know, etc. All the more important when I need reliability in a vehicle that I take out in the middle of nowehere. I too have owned many jeeps... learned to drive in a Willy's - then a CJ-5, had a CJ-7 than an XJ. One of my best friends owns a Jeep dealership... I'd own one in a heartbeat if they had better quality.

Fan boys will always knock the competition. All makes have their problems and Tacoma's are not perfect as some fan boys will have you believe. I would drive a new Jeep I just like Tacoma's more. I wish the TRD 4X4 was SFA but I can do a SAS to correct that problem. I have friends with new Jeeps that I wheel with and they are ready to wheel right off the showroom floor.

And I think that's it! A rubicon is ready to go as soon as you drive it off the lot. You pay the same amount of money for a tacoma, and have to put another $5,000-$10,000 in to it, to get it to the same off road level.

You'd be amazed at some people I've known that love to mod vehicles but then won't leave the pavement because they're worried about doing damage.

Shoot. I've got one coworker who bought an FJ Cruiser because it is off-road capable but refuses to go off-roading in fear of the clear coat being scratched. Of course, they are the same ones to complain about the 16mpg that the FJ gets. I keep asking, "Why did you buy it, exactly?"

    People are weird.

This was a test done on a stock vehicle, some of the points lost on the 4runner were for tires lack of full skid plates and having too many electronics. They are obviously jeep fans because of the factory off road readiness and the lack of technology. There is a bigger gap on road than there is off road and while the 4runner can close the gap on this test (this specific test, not all off roading) by going aftermarket, the Jeep won't ever perform as good on road. If Toyota treated the Trail Edition like they do the Off Road or Baja packages on the Tacoma and put off road tires on it, it would have easily scored higher than the Tacoma since it performed better in most of the tests. The top three scored higher on their package contents (due to full skids, off road tires and front and rear lockers) than they did on their actual testing. If you look at the fact that the 4runner had the lowest score in package contents, but the 3rd highest score in performance, that's pretty impressive. It could have easily had the highest score overall and in the tests if it had off road tires and full skids.

The posted article is about the 4runner vs Cherokee/Patriot not the Wrangler. The article your looking at was a wrong posted link from 2013 posted by Chris4x4. OP is talking about the 2015 test where a car based unibody Cherokee beat the 4runner even tho the 4runner beat the Cherokee in the offroad segment of the test.
