HAHA Hay I have been that guy LOL my wife use to roll her eyes at times getting into my rigs. I have had some pretty cool radio setups in my trucks. I believe if you can get 2 VE's together they can administer a test still. Or at least it use to be that way. Years ago when I took the novice test the written test was a breeze. The morse code kicked my butt. I have sever testing problems. I could sit in class and copy 10 to 12 words per minute. But when I was taking the 5 words per minute test I could not do anything. It took me 4 or 5 times to finally pass. And it was a friends parents that were both VE's that fooled me into coming over and just doing a practice session that was actually a test. I almost fainted as I had 95% copy then they told me I passed the test on copy alone.. LOL Then the 13 words per minute was kind of a breeze for my general license. Not sure why but it was

So you don't want to be able to radio other people. Only be restricted to the local area?

    Go for it then

I only use the CB for wheeling. I admit, some parts of it sound useful. The GPS function and being able to call you guys up for help. Or starting a trip and being able to get hold of you guys for updates in case plans change. But the price is just way up there.

Haha sorry really it's just HF.

Can't use ham like a cb really.

Yea..it's not cheap. It's worth it though for all those reasons.

I thought you might say that... I haven't looked into it at all yet. Is it more like a cell phone where you have 1 on 1 connections rather than broadcasting out to whoever is in range and on your channel?

    Yes and no.

It's like a cellphone in a sense you make "calls" and talk with one person at a time. But it's still broadcasts over the freq so others can monitor it just find. Once your done talking if someone overheard you and wants to add they just call you.

One of the nice things about dstar is all call signs pop up and get saved so you can easily call someone if you miss their call sign.

Then there is direct calling, which yes only the two people can hear.

I see. I just don't feel like I have a use for that. Especially when I have a cell phone with a standalone GPS. Plus I already have a CB for the trail. I just don't do remote enough wheeling to need more than my cell phone for calls. I've yet to be somewhere that I couldn't walk to the top of a nearby peak and at least have enough service to make a phone call.

YEA I plan on also adding a CB for the trails. Unless I get the IC706 then I can do a mod and it will also work on CB along with HF/VHF/UHF/6M. I believe most people have CB although it seems like HAM is catching on

I lose service while on the trail, but I can always just hike/drive to a nearby peak and find it again. There is almost always service on all of the high points even when I am a few hours from the nearest town around here.

Though there are lots of trails that I mostly wheel within an hour of me.

So, basically everyone is still going to be using a cb because calling someone over and over again will get annoying?

Ham has way further range though. So like this year we could have used them a lot when we got spread out. We could have talked to Marc and Josh a lot better to make sure they were in route after the cluster fuck of a day.

You can call for help in places no phone can.

The CB will still be used more when in groups in close proximity. I'm not denying that. They are still very handy and cheap. The ham radio just allows better communicatation.

    Sick dent

Situations like that I definitely see ham having a huge advantage. I'm gonna give it some consideration. Even when I go up the mountain by myself in the truck it's a little sketch at times cause I know if something happens I'm gonna be hiking a good ways to find service. Or when I go up on my bike, I occasionally go by myself and that's even sketchier cause I know I have to be extra careful. If something were to happen I'd be kinda screwed if I have no phone communication.

Yea a handheld would be ideal for you too probably.

Why? I have explained this many times. It's not a cb. It doesn't work like cb. Their are protocols you have to follow and just general courtesies you have to follow. Hence the requirement for lisence.
