Because he was CHP doesn't mean he was a highly trained patrol officer. He could have been a file clerk in the store room or something.

Most new car floor mats have thousands of little twongs that stick out and grab the carpet. Toyota has the hooks and holes deal to PREVENT the mats from moving, I've always thought that was a good idea.
Maybe mats with those little things sticking out plus the hooks and holes would be better.

Whenever my wife takes her 4Runner to the car wash it comes home with the mats OFF the hooks and I have to re-hook them.

I've had a Toyota since I bought my '96 4Runner new and I've never had a problem with the mats vs. the gas pedal but I suppose there's always that chance.

And....top fuel drivers can steer, pedal the throttle, pop the chute, work the brake and I don't know what all else at 300MPH in less than 4 seconds. They've had practice and training though and they don't do it on an off-ramp.

How the hell did this guy have time to call 911 but not time to put the car in neutral or pull on the mat. If the pedal was stuck down you would feel it with your foot.
Could it be it wouldn't go into neutral?
Mythbusters will need to check this one out.

I have a very basic question about the fatal car crash. It says this:

Does anyone actually know if the "rubber all-weather floor mat" is Toyota brand?

OK, for everybody that doesn't know how to read, I linked a story that was quoted on the second page of this thread...

YES this includes the all-weather mats. In fact, it looks like it's SPECIFIC TO the all-weather mats.

Also, I read somebody say that they should just make sure that the floor mat is on the floor and well up under the pedal, thus making sure that the pedal doesn't get caught under the edge. Per the quote below, the pedal is getting stuck in the ribs of the mat, not necessarily under the edge.

    RE: floormats

What a bunch of crap. More work for the lawyers.

I recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it:

    IDIOCRACY

Very funny and very sad because of the truth in it.

BTW. No way is a dealer going to take away my mats without a fight. I
think the all weather mats were $100.

    Cheers!

Do you really think they're going to come TAKE your floormats from you? If you want to keep your mats, keep your mats. Just don't go into the dealership and ask for the recall.

But... if you want to fight over your mats, I guess you could tell them you have all-weather mats and want the recall, then turn into a Schizophrenic and say, 'HELL NO you're not getting MY mats!'

I heard of this awhile ago watching youtube. the owners were wanting toyota to do something about this back i 07 , 08 . I guess the previous owners got their wish after a few mishaps beyond there control. good for them and a preventative measure for us the current and future tacoma owners.

pffft floor mats, mine work fine so far, and I was leery of them under the pedals.

Maybe they'll do some P.R. for me and throw in the 4 leaf tsb for my non tsb reg cab lol

Just installed new all weather mats in my 2010 double cab and I love them. Had the same mats in my Jetta and it has 177,000 miles and looks brand new so I don't know what folks are talkin' bout when they say theirs are all worn with holes. I'd be glad to give those shitty factory mats back for a $200 credit!!! Poor cop and his family, he shouldn't have been talkin' on his damn cell phone (hello let the wife dial 911 Yo!) maybe then he could have figured out to put it in neutral. peace

What a tragic accident. As far as the non-reaction of the driver, he was in a non-familiar vehicle (his was being serviced) plus its easy to second guess the guy but honestly who knows, it happened the way it happened. God bless those left.

Now as far as the recall, its just weird, my honda mats ride up if I am not careful getting in. When its my time, its my time whether its a mat caught under my accellerator or a huge spider crawling on my arm while up on the roof or something else...
