It seems like there are a LOT of older dodge ram trucks on the road. What's your guys take on Dodge Ram trucks? They seem to have some pretty impressive stats on the fairly new V6 both in towing and mpg. I also know their diesels are bullet proof and the most sought after. Not sure how they would stack up against Toyota as far as durability though...

Dodge would be my second choice for full size truck actually. I have heard from a coworker that his interior is pretty cheap on the dodge he drives, but the new trans are supposed to be really good and of course the cummins is a pretty reliable platform. Interested to see what Op chooses though.

I had an 05 f150 for a bit and it saw the garage quite a bit since I refused to pay service prices. Exhaust manifold, camshaft positioning sensors, plugs, and a couple injectors all went out within 10k miles of each other. It had 130k when I bought it and by 140k it was gone. I love the look of the fords and the interiors, but I'll be damned if I own something else with a motor that says fomoco anywhere on it.

I would think GM diesels are more sought after. The Cummins are better than Duramax but the Allison is the best transmission hands down and the GM is a better overall truck. If you go looking for diesels on the market it seems like ford 6.0 and Dodges are a dime a dozen.

I think Dodge is dead last in truck reliability. Maybe that's why you can buy a new ram loaded for like 26k every other week. If I were going for domestic I would go GM or Ford.

I really wish Toyota would just put a V-8 motor in the Tacoma and I would be happy. going from my tundra to the Tacoma v-6 has me kicking myself here and there.

i have been Ford loyal since i can remember.
i have owned several Ford trucks as well as Bronco's over the years
    and still own a 76 Highboy F250 and just sold a 79 F150 4x4 that i bought in 95.
in my opinion the 78/79 was the best looking truck that Ford has ever built.

I looked off and on for a truck over the past year.
i gave Ford a hard look and decided that i would be better off with a Tacoma.
the Tacoma looks better and from what i have read, I will get a lot longer trouble free
running out of the Tacoma when compared to a Ford.

Without trying to repeat myself, in our work fleet the F150 with the 3.5 L Ecoboost is the cheapest truck for us to operate with the highest "uptime". By uptime I mean the least amount of time the truck is in for service or repairs due to wear, maintenance, and breakage. Now we only keep our trucks for 3-5 years and none of the F150's in the fleet has been here for the full 5 years so you can take that with a grain of salt, but to me there is no arguing that the quality control of Ford is currently higher than that of Chevy or Dodge. Several of our Fords are over 100,000 miles on original engines and transmissions in sever duty conditions. The only thing we do to baby our trucks is synthetic oil changes at the manufacturer recommended intervals.

I cannot comment on the Tundra because our company yanked the few we had from the fleet about 6 months ago due to there high operating costs.

The Tacoma isn't big enough to utilize the bigger motor. If you tried to add on the equipment to make it safe to town half ton loads and payloads, then you'd simply end up with another half ton. A Tacoma with 6500 lbs behind it or max payload in it is a pretty sketchy truck at 65 mph as it is. So is a Colorado at max numbers. Toyota doesn't need another half ton in the line up. That, and CAFE regulations, a market trending towards MPG, and the fact the V8's are slowly dying off in the market....

Anyways you and I have been down this road before. Toyota won't put a V8 in the Tacoma. At best, maybe one day you could see a diesel or a turbo I4 that will give you a bit more power but the truck still won't be able to utilize it properly for loads. If you want a truck that tows 8000 lbs, buy a full sized because our mini trucks aren't going to be built for that.

Your point is mute. I doubt that guy on the video is using brakes on the trailer.
If 17 000 LB Kenworth can Tow 40 000 lb of steel (I know that, I have CDL A and spend quite time driving OTR ) with out looking like passenger car on the video ....

Surely Toyota can make 4600 lb truck tow 8500 lb trailer.

If you towing at 65 MPH than you have other issues. Towed with my Tacoma at 6500 mark quite few times, and no problems. In fact if you look on this very forum there are plenty of people towing at max mark. Never felt it was sketchy, But I was keeping with max of 55MPH.
Yes they would have to upgrade suspension and Frame. but they should do this anyway because current setup blows compare to that on 1Gen. you could load full bed of sand on 1gen Tacoma and that thing squatted but did not had frame flex. Try that with 2gen and it will start looking like horseshoe with wheels.

Again what do Truck drivers do dragging trailers that double and triple of their weight ?
If you are not using Trailer brakes than this is whats going to happen.
Otherwise, .... You can pull a lot more than what your vehicle weights.

Again, I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it won't be done. My point is that with a 1/2 ton truck I can tow a 6500 lbs load at 65 mph no problem on a 70 mph speed limit highway. That's the minimum speed of traffic so that's my "safe" speed. I'm not saying you can't tow 6500 lbs with the current Tacoma. Actually if you go into the the towing section there are guys moving around small farm equipment 10-20 miles that weighs 7000-9000 lbs with there Tacoma. Does that mean it's smart to do so? I don't think so.

Try towing even 5000 lbs with your Tacoma then do the same thing with an F150. It's a night and day difference mostly because the F150 isn't getting pushed around by that trailer. The same way I wouldn't tow 10,000 lbs with an F150 I wouldn't tow 6000 lbs with a Tacoma. It's just to large a load for me to feel confident with, and I do a lot of towing.

Like I said, they won't ever cross that 1/2 ton line with the Tacoma. If you don't think that's right that's your problem. The Tacoma is just to small to do what you want to do with it.

Tractor trailers have airbrakes and dual to triple axles on the drive unit for a reason... You throw those things on a 1/4 ton maybe you'd have a similar situation ;). Can we get off this argument? You're 1/2 ton Tacoma isn't coming anytime soon.

EDIT I should also mention that anything longer than a single trailer unit is banned in most of BC and some mountain states for a reason. There's a big difference between trucking in the outback on mostly private roads and trying to navigate around traffic in a busy, possibly snowy, pass.

Sure, I am not saying Tacoma with extra towing is coming, hence why we are in Ford thread. If it was coming we would be in Towing 8500lb with 2016 Tacoma. :D
I dont understand peoples fixation on weight, but it could be that I am used to so that makes no difference to me. Than again most people can't backup even empty one axle 4 foot trailer.
