I can't believe the did all this knowing many tacomas make this noise during warmup and some have been for over 200,000 miles . Mine does it so does almost all of them here at my local lot , just a noise I guess

Not really a link but found early model tacos and early 4runners with very high milage and the guys showing the noise saying it's always done it . Sometimes gotta chalk it up to man made machines they all make unique noises , like when they tore hotrod motor completely down they couldn't find a single thing wrong with it but since it did have some issues after there service department put it back togeather half ass they kinda had to give him a new truck to just end the drama.

From all the noises posted and descriptions, it sounds like a chain setup. It will not damage chain immediately but if anybody keeps running like that I would imagine its going to stretch chain way beyond specs and if it does damage, its going to be catastrophic.
Lettings warm up and stop before driving is probably best option, but on the end if thats lack of oil in the chain no matter how you going baby it, its going to let go. The only difference is in what mileage and how many times you started it.
Some people start their truck and put 100 miles on it before another start, others will start and put 50 miles on it.
Regardless thats something that needs fixing if truck supposed to last.

EDIT: I wrote that sounds like Chain but problem could be in oil pump not giving enough pressure when cold. I wrote this to somebody else but I had similiar thing on my LC when my seal around oil pump was bad. When I would start truck it always sounded like chain vibrating and hitting cover.
Replaced seal in oil pump and I never heard noise again. But that was 1FZ so not sure if that would be the same.

I have 07 and the only extra noise I get when its really really cold (0F -14F) is the fan spinning at higher RPMS.
Otherwise noting extra. Once it drops in RPMS engine noise is almost nonexistent.

If they couldn't find something wrong, it does not mean there wasn't. A Toyota engineer checked mine, his diagnostic pointed out oil pump as culprit, so we have one vehicle that its diagnostic not yielded result and another that did. If there are 4-Runners with high millage and noise, it does not bring anything new to the table, it just states that you may not have issues down the road because some haven't yet experienced failure, so it brings me back to what I mentioned earlier, its a matter of if you are willing to risk it and if you can live with something that sounds like shit on startup. For me, I was not willing to be taken by dealership or Toyota knowing for a fact that not all Tacomas sound like that on startup, and I was definitely was not pleased to listen to that on every startup, so I did something about it, and so did hotroad, was it easy? No, it never is, at the end we both came on top and finally got to enjoy our purchase, I know I am.

Is there any reason why you need to deal with that on startup when others don't?

    100% agreement with epa4wd.
Service guys are known for claiming "It normal, I can't hear anything"

The only suggestion I have is for those people with the problem and no action from Toyota service to try to install oil pressure gauge.
Unfortunately even in 2016 Tacoma there is no oil pressure gauge, you would think that along the Transmission temp gauge, those two would be more important than GoPro mount, but apparently not.
So needs to be installed afterwards. Oil pressure gauge should tell you guys if you dealing with bad oil pump.

i just listened to the video in post #605 and that sounded just like my 2009 Subaru forester ,only my forester was proly 3 times as noisy. When the engine warmed up that thing would purr like a kitten. My next door neighbor (subaru mechanic ) told me that was the worst case of piston slap he ever heard. He said there wasnt t a week go by that they were not doing piston work on that type of motor. He said that over the years subaru was gradually reducing the length of the piston skirt and making them more tapered resulting in that piston wobble noise until the engine warms up. i guess my question would be has toyota done this with the 2nd generation tacoma pistons since 2005. i looked and cant find anything about it.I have a 2007 v6 trd and i dont get that noise in minus 30 F.

Taking my truck in tommorrow for this noise as well and I can't remember if it was said on this thread or not but was the culprit ever named was it the oil pump or timing chain or did they never determine . I just would like to have a direction to push the techs towards

I wouldn't push them in any direction, if you go in mentioning oil pump or timing chain all that will do is get their guard up real quick. If anything, I would go in playing dumb, maybe whispering serpentine belt or pulley, because what you need is an acknowledgement from their side, if they are inclined to think it may be something simple, an acknowledgment would be more likely, once you have that, the rest will be much easier.

That makes since , just wondering if they found your oil pump to be the noise maker why didn't they just replace that instead of the whole truck . Is it very labor intensive

I finally got the noise fixed on my '14 tacoma. I spent about a year hassling with the dealer I bought the truck from. The truck would always have to be dropped off the night before to diagnose a cold start noise. They would hear the noise on one visit, ask to have the truck brought back so a shop foreman could listen, then subjectively the noise would not be heard. They would compare my truck to other new trucks that also had the same noise, so it was deemed normal. I finally took the truck to a different dealer and totally different experience. It was quickly diagnosed, escalated to a regional Toyota contact, and within 3 days I had a new oil pump installed, truck sounds perfect. Glad I persevered to get it fixed because now don't feel frustrated with the truck every time I start it. In the end, I learned every shop is not created equal in both mechanical ability and customer service.

OP why is the temp sensor in the mirror so important to you? Maybe you already answered, just curious.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
It's important to me because I live in a snow belt. I like to know what the temp is to make a judgement of whether to expect ice on the road or not. My wife uses it to judge whether to badger me while I drive as to whether to shut off the AC. The bad part about that is she doesn't like wind either, so shutting off the AC does not mean that I can open the windows.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    I am a dick.

    I like head.

I am confused? Isn't the point of dealer checking it out always to get it fixed?

Who buys a truck and says... "boy I hope I can let it sit and the dealer for a mystery problem, and oh boy if I am really lucky they will lemon law it!"

Its good the dealer is trying! Better than I got with my 2013, they refused to believe it had a problem. 4 batteries in 25k miles.. stranded more often in my brand new truck than in my 30 year old truck. That was irritating! But since they kept replacing the battery, and it is easy to have my jumper cables just in case the truck dies isn't too hard. I did love the truck except for that.
