Based on what the Jeep and Fiat execs have been saying, the next Wrangler may well lose the solid axle and be aluminum-bodied. A Wrangler-based pickup might end up being similar to the next Taco...

I've rented 4-door JKs with both the earlier 3.8L minivan engine and the 3.6L Pentastar. The 3.8L was a pig and dangerous for passing on two-lane roads. The 3.6L brings performance to a decent level, but it doesn't feel faster than the V6 Taco when you step on it, probably because the JK is slightly heavier. The steering is sloppy due to the steering box instead of rack-and-pinion. As a daily driver it isn't as good as the Taco.

    2005 Tacoma DCLB 4x4:
    0-60 mph 6.9 | Quarter mile 15.6
    http://media.caranddriver.com/files...-4x4-v-6-long-bed0702-toytac-ltinitial-ts.pdf

I think the Pro's BFG A/Ts may be hobbling track performance slightly.

Definitely. When you look at the comparisons between the new colorados and canyons you'll see that they barely get better #'s than the Pro's. I feel if the pro ran street tires or GM twins ran the BFG's we'd see that the Tacoma is still the better performer. Yes the twins have better torque and hp but the end result barely beats out the Tacoma with heavy ass AT's and lifted in the front.

Edit: why am I talking about the twins in a jeep thread! Ha!

Every 100lbs is a tenth in the qtr mile... the TRD PRO needs to drop 600lbs to make up the 6/10th's difference...

...the 40 extra total lbs of the BFG A/T's unsprung weight isn't hindering the truck by 6/10ths

LOL Consumer Reports hates the Jeep Wrangler so much I just had to buy one. Yes I'm concerned about long term reliability hell I think of Moe, Larry, and Curly when someone mentions Jeep, Chrysler, and Fiat. So far though there's not been one issue or problem and I'm having a blast driving it. Good power, 6-speed geared just right with 3.73's, and 19 mpg average with a high of 22.

Jeep dealers have been screaming for a truck ever since the old Commander was discontinued. With Ram abandoning the mid-size truck (Dakota) to concentrate on 1/2 ton and up, it seems like a perfect time to market a smaller "lifestyle" truck under the Jeep brand.

unsprung weight. wheel and tire weight impacts acceleration way more than an extra passenger or bumper weight. picture having to turn a wheel from the center (as a vehicle would have to) now add weigh towards the edge of the wheel. it requires exponetially greater force to rotate it because the wheel essentially has leverage on you now. for an even simpler idea. hold a 4 ft poll at one end and add 10 pounds to the other end. it will feel like much more than 10 pounds because of the mechanical advantage has be decrease over the lenth of the poll

40 pounds of unsprung weight still isn't changing 6/10ths

Porche considers unsprung weight a 7:1 ratio, so 40lbs unsprung weight according to Porsche should equate to 280lbs, and using ur numbers that would save about 3/10th. So half of the difference between the two just from tire "upgrade"

Well that's one of many variables that play a role when you change tires... What about the difference in friction?

I would for sure consider it. Just for the solid axle.

If it were priced comparably, absolutely. More horsepower, better mpgs, and a solid axle.

Jeep Wranglers are as bad as Chevy Caveliers and Dodge Neons in terms of reliablity. Piles of shit but very fun when working properly.
My dad has had 6 Jeep Wranglers since I was 4 and had one before he passed. He loved his Jeeps and he loved working on them and he was always working on them for reasons here or there.

First car I bought with my own money was a new 1991 Cavalier. Never had a day of trouble with it, and wish I'd kept it instead of selling it before going overseas.

The difference doesn't come from the BFG A/T's extra weight as much as having less grip on pavement than the tires on earlier Tacos. That's why the Pro is noticeably worse than SR5 in every measurable parameter on pavement: acceleration, braking, and roadholding (skidpad).
