    ^What sets Icon apart is the fact it isn't a kit. They take the VIN plate from a wrecked FJ and build a vehicle around it. Legally Icon had "restored" an FJ from the '70s and sold it to you, easy to insure and to get a license plate for, not subject to smog testing.

    Just read an article yesterday that Jeep is looking at an 8 speed trans and potentially going Hybrid in 2018.

    Got to give it to Jeep, at least they try and move forward and keep up with consumer wants and fresh ideas, good or bad.

    no, the only way they can keep alive as a company based on the new cafe restrictions is with an 8 speed tranny and hybrid drive train, its not what the consumer wants, its what the EPA wants.

    I'd still enjoy putting it together even if it meant they had to take it back apart and shipped it in pieces.

    One of these days, I'll get around to tearing something down to the frame and building it back up. Maybe an FJ, maybe an old Jeep Honcho.

    I don't think a hybrid is gonna make it, but a smaller version of the Pentastar V6 (3.2 I think), with a turbo, along with a diesel option, and aluminum body are coming up. The owner of Fiat said he isn't going to make it an IFS design, as he himself is a fan of the wrangler (According to one article, that was the only reason he bought Chrysler/Jeep), and is well aware of needing to keep the heritage "pure" to some degree.

    I kinda wonder how far the "restoration" rule can be stretched. What if you buy a Hilux in Mexico, drive it across the border, then declare it as a total loss? Transplant the VIN plate and doorjamb label from a wrecked Tacoma onto the Hilux and call it a restoration?

    Ah. I read it in a different article. Carbon fiber would add way too much to the cost, and Im sure they could get similar results with the use of aluminum, and high strength steel construction. The addition of the 8 speed auto has shown 10% or more, gains in the vehicles its been installed in. I would expect more gain in the wrangler platform. Plus, reduction of weight would be a good thing. Mine weighs in at 5000 pounds, with about 1/4 tank of fuel. 600# over what my Taco weighed.
