You probably paid for a registration your your truck...but not a "license plate fee" or "purchase cost" and when you sell/dispose of the truck-You are probably required to surrender the plate back to the state (technically).

It's not your to hack up...even tho it goes on your car...and as such...I'd bet you COULD catch some heat for that.

Apparently folks are making out all right by just ignoring the laws and running without a plate...I wouldn't recommend that..but I guess it works?? The easy way to to mount the plate properly...or move to a state that doesn't have two.

And good on you for asking for input/info about it...

Since I'm in the military I'm a resident of WV even though I live in CA. If an excuse comes up for me to drive across the country, I'll just drive to WV and register my truck there. That will solve the front license plate problem as well as wanting to tint my front windows.

Nothing wrong with this thread & what OP was asking.
No assumptions made about intent other than information collection.
No accusations made about DMV infractions making one a criminal.
Fully understand the difference between your stated infractions.

Guess my point about the other thread was that people should also understand not coming on here posting up something that everybody should or shouldn't be doing with some holier than thou type scolding save the world attitude because it'll never receive any unanimous approval & just instigates uneccessary drama. Taking a poke at that silly thread does not constitute any automatic comparison that these 2 threads are the same thing. This thread, perfectly good question...other thread, soap box caca born of not having a sarcasm detector.

For Christ's sakes people its a front plate, leave it on,be legal, take it off, take your chances. It varies from state to state. Personally I try not to give any cop a reason to pull me over...

Here in AZ, the plate stays with you, not the vehicle. I have had the same plate for 2 trucks.

I've had the same plate on 3 trucks. But not sure what would happen if I just sell the vehicle...

here in Jersey you need 2 plates and they must be mounted to the truck @ all times. If you put 1 plate in the windsheild you can get pulled over for it. 9 out of 10 times they ticket for it here in wayne, it's already happend to me twice.

Yeah...You CAN keep plates and depending on how you buy/sell/trade you can keep your plates (I have the same plates on the Taco that were on my wife's CR-V).

I do know that NYS and I'm pretty sure FL would take them back if you just un-registered the car or got into an accident and didn't replace the car.

Here in Nevada you can keep the plate or turn it in for a new one. The kicker is, it's cheaper to get a new plate. WTF.

think it was nothing but a waste of money to make new plates for everyone who had that plate... now if they wanted to give them out to people who needed new plates that's one thing... my old ones were perfectly good - did not need to be replaced. Just raised my taxes to waste it!

I'm pretty sure they were going to do it that way, but I herd someone saying they made all new plates new so people that wern't regestered wouldn't have plates any more.

I used to operate with no front plate. It cost met about $10.00 every other year for about 8 years. Each time I get pulled over and I would receive a fix-it ticket. You must have a front plate and it must be attached to the front of the vehicle to be legal in California. Putting on the dashboard doesn't cut it either. I tried that. LOL

The best thing to do would be to print that picture in post #1 and show it to a CHP or another officer and ask them what they would do.

I found it. The owner of that taco in post #1 would be in violation of CVC section 5201(e)(2). The issuing state MUST be visible. See the bold text below

    CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE

    :: SECTION 5200-5206

5200. When two license plates are issued by the department for a
vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were
issued, one in the front and the other in the rear. When one license
plate is issued for use upon a vehicle, it shall be attached to the
    rear thereof.

5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the
vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from
swinging and shall be mounted in a position to be clearly visible,
and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible.
The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor
more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate
shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground, except as
    follows:
    (a) The rear license plate on a tow truck may be mounted on the
left-hand side of the mast assembly at the rear of the cab of the
vehicle, not less than 12 inches nor more than 90 inches from the
    ground.
    (b) The rear license plate on a tank vehicle hauling hazardous
waste, as defined in Section 25117 of the Health and Safety Code, or
asphalt material may be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than
    90 inches from the ground.
    (c) The rear license plate on a truck tractor may be mounted at
the rear of the cab of the vehicle, not less than 12 inches nor more
than 90 inches from the ground.
    (d) The rear license plate of a vehicle designed by the
manufacturer for the collection and transportation of garbage,
rubbish, or refuse and which is used regularly for the collection and
transportation of that material by any person or governmental entity
employed to collect, transport, and dispose of garbage, rubbish, or
refuse may be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 90 inches
    from the ground.
    (e) No covering shall be used on license plates except as follows:

    (1) The installation of a cover over a lawfully parked vehicle to
protect it from the weather and the elements does not constitute a
violation of this subdivision. Any peace officer or other regularly
salaried employee of a public agency designated to enforce laws,
including local ordinances, relating to the parking of vehicles may
temporarily remove so much of the cover as is necessary to inspect
any license plate, tab, or indicia of registration on a vehicle.
    (2) The installation of a license plate security cover is not a
violation of this subdivision if the device does not obstruct or
impair the recognition of the license plate information, including,
but not limited to, the issuing state
    ,
    license plate number, and
registration tabs, and the cover is limited to the area directly over
the top of the registration tabs. No portion of a license plate
security cover shall rest over the license plate number.
    (f) No casing, shield, frame, border, or other device that
obstructs or impairs the reading or recognition of a license plate by
a remote emission sensing device, as specified in Sections 44081 and
44081.6 of the Health and Safety Code, shall be installed on, or
    affixed to, a vehicle.
