I have a 2006 Access Cab SR5 that I just bought in October '14 and I already knew about the recall on the year of the truck so I was not worried about that. I brought a friend along with me to inspect the truck who actually has the same truck but the TRD version.

The rust on the frame was noticeable but we didn't find any holes and it appeared to look strong. I took the truck into my local Toyota dealer on 12/27/14 and they had it for about half of the day and they called me and said "we ordered you a new frame, we also took pictures to send to Toyota to determine if the rust is significant enough to have you bring it in immediately for a loaner vehicle."

It is 1/28/15 and I haven't heard anything from the dealer but the service manager explained that the frame probably wouldn't be replaced until April. Since I have been reading these forums and this thread, I can say I am not bothered by this as long as I am provided with a similar vehicle (I requested SUV) because I need my truck for my job. The service manager told me they had 8 trucks sitting in the lot waiting to get the frame replaced and that they just replaced the frame on a Sequoia.

My truck has a power steering leak that I already had the hoses replaced but it still leaks. I can see it coming from the rack and pinion and the mechanic said that would have to be replaced if the hoses don't solve the leak. He said it was really rusty at the rack and pinion and that is what made me decide to call the dealer to have my VIN checked for the recall. I'm hoping once they do replace the frame, they will replace the rack and pinion due to rust. If not I will probably have it and other parts replaced if needed. Hope this helps anyone wondering about the process.

Had mine resprayed back in October and it is still gooey! Not applied as sloppily as Chris(NJ)'s pics, but still wasn't very happy. That stuff is messy as hell... Hope it will dry up when it warms up????

I hear ya. I got the crap all over my jeans when I changed the oil a couple weeks ago. I've driven mine through a car wash a couple times, and they seemed to take the worst of the really tacky stuff off.

I've not yet read through this entire thread, but can anyone tell me, if the dealer determines that no frame replacement is required and the just the under-coating is needed, does anything get removed to apply that coating or is it applied while everything stays intact on the truck?

For the most part everything stays on the truck, they lift it up and just spray all of the metal parts underneath. They "should" remove the spare tire but it seems like that isn't always the case either.

I finally agreed to take mine back today. They left it in a heated garage for the past week and the warmer air clearly made a big difference. You can see that a lot of the crc has begun to "dry". I didnt touch it, bc I didn't want to get any more of my hands, but you can tell just by looking at it that it's better. Toyota really should've sent these letters out in the spring/summer so that it would've dried quicker upon application.

Has the dealer removed the bed from any of the trucks? My local dealer said they will remove the bed and hand clean the frame and then coat.

My 2005 truck's frame was replaced a few weeks ago. My steering rack and pressure lines were found to be in bad shape, and they called me to ask what I wanted to do. I asked about having these parts replaced as part of the frame campaign. They said no, and that if I wanted them to replace the parts, I would have to pay. The options I was given were: $997 for an after-market rack, or $1,385 for the Toyota rack. I opted for the $997 approach.

Please let us know if they agree to replace your steering rack under the frame replacement campaign. I don't know about others on here, but if they agree to do yours, I would like to use your experience as a basis to approach Toyota for a reimbursement.

I finally have something i can add to this thread. My local dealer called me up to make sure i was aware of the campaign and they wanted me to bring the truck in for inspection. I told him i was aware of the campaign and i can't figure out how it would be in my best interest to bring the truck in any earlier than this time next year. That started our discussion about the whole campaign and i asked him quite a few questions. He did not hesitate once with any of my questions or hmmm and hawww around an answer. it sounds like they are already familiar with what needs to be done.

    My 2 main questions:

what if there is no hole found? i didnt find any but i clearly have metal separation issues where the frame is not boxed in. The service guy i spoke to said that they will test any areas that look suspect, and if they feel that even if no holes are found present but they feel something will be an issue even a year down the road that they will document it and push Toyota for a new frame for the vehicle.

what if i get the coating and say a year or 18 months later i have a hole show up? then what? i was told that i should then bring it in so they can document it and send a request for a frame to toyota. He said within a reasonable amount of time from the coating they would do this for a customer. He did say he couldnt put a definite answer on what a reasonable amount of time, but that is understandable.

I felt a little better about the situation after talking to the guy, i was worried i would be SOL if i got this coating done now.

He also said that right now they have something like 67 frames on order. he said if anything looks like it will be an issue in the near future, they are pushing for frame replacements for the customer and so far Toyota is complying with all of their "judgement calls" i guess you could call it.

I read all the threads on this subject. Sounds like you have a good dealer in your corner. From what I've read a lot of dealers are not. Congratulations.

Got word from my local dealer that my frame was started today. That was the good news.

The bad news is the next week or so is going to be a big headache with them trying to nickle and dime me with shit that they claim I need. The service rep called and stated that they started my truck today. However they had to stop due to the sub box and amp mounted behind my rear seat which they were going to charge me an hour and a half in labor to remove because it was blocking 2 bolts they needed to access to get the cab off the frame. Then he proceeded to tell me that I have 2 marker bulbs out in my headlights and they were doingn to be $4 each plus a half hour in labor to install.

Needless to say I was rather pissed and drove down there after work to talk to my service rep and the service manager. After a little ranting about how I've been without my truck for 4 months (dropped her off at the dealer Oct. 2) and the fact that it's not my fault the frame failed, not to mention that the stick storage compartment behind the seats in the DC likely cover the same bolts as my sub box they decided to wave the hour and half to remove the sub box without any extra charge. I understand the service reps are trained to sell things to people, but when I have to tell the guy literally 5-6 times not to replace the bulbs and not to call me and try to sell me anything it got a little disheartening. Hopefully the next week isn't going to be a complete headache and I get my truck back without any issues. Good luck to anyone else dealing with this nonsense or a pain in the ass dealer. From what I've read most of you guys had a fairly pain free experience with the frame replacement.

I dread the phone call from dealer telling me what I need to have replaced!
I am still waiting for frame, about 3.5 months now.
When I originally had taken it in for verification of hole in frame they started on me then. Kept saying now's the time to replace this and that. Started with upper a arms, rack and pinion....etc

Sometimes the Dealers really deserve the moniker "Stealerships" and pray on those who do not insist on proof, full explanation and documentation of the money they pry from the Customers. (Note - Not ALL Dealerships - just too many).

Perusing the Frame replacement Threads leads me to believe that Toyota will replace the frame and any necessary parts for THIS change. Per listings of Parts used in these threads these include rear leafs, lower control arm, Brake lines among many other misc. parts. The Cost to the Customer should be Zero.

With that said - there probably will be other parts that could be replaced at the same time of the frame replacement. For example, Brakes, other front end parts, normal wear parts, etc. Now I believe that the Deaerl has a responsibility to e sure that the truck "passes state safety" inspection when it leaves the shop (i.e. brakes work, tires not thread bare, etc.) and the Customer may, in my opinion, understandably be responsible for the cost of these "normal maintenance items" - But the dealer should not "Require" additional cost to the customer - Unless the Customer chooses to have the Dealer perform the repairs.

Also, I would have the dealer do any work that "I want only a Dealer to perform" when the frame is replaced to help save costs. However, normal easily repaired other items (Brakes, Shocks, etc.) I would either replace my self or get these repairs completed at a reputable local shop and save big $$. Perhaps I'd pay for some really worn front end parts - but otherwise I'd wait. Savings in parts cost alone will probably pay for non dealer labor IMO.

With this said - I do not see, in these threads, that the dealer gives the customer a list of "Must do" vs. "Should do" items. They should not be listing up a full rebuild /remanufacturing repair build for the vehicle and intimidate the customer to spend THOUSANDS for repairs that are not immediately required /related to frame replacements.

It makes me wonder why Toyota lets this happen - and - whether the dealers are using this opportunity to just fail/change the frames and bilk the customers.

As I stated - some Dealers are great and explain this - others just open the cash register drawer and put your cash within .....

I wish Toyota would clearly clarify this in the recall letters to the Customer ....

    (Rant Off)

Okay guys, I'm gonna go back through this thread but if someone who had their frame replaced could post the invoice on here it would be appreciated. I got another call from the dealer today telling me they need to replace all my body mount bushings and that they cost $360 from Toyota. Anyone have this problem with the dealer trying to charge you for bushings? I find it ridiculous that an item that really only needs replacing due to the truck being disassembled should be a cost to me instead of Toyota.

Anyway, my local dealer started my replacement yesterday, and a couple posts back you can see that yesterday was headache dealing with the service department also. And I feel this week is going to be a big pain in my ass. So if anyone can access their invoice of what was replaced that would be a big help for me, thanks guys

Just scrolled up about 10 posts and saw one. But if someone has on that's been scanned so I can print and brings to my dealer and tell them to stick the extra $$ for body mount bushing up there ass it would still help

There are a few full invoices posted within the Threads and at least two show "No Charge" for the frame replacement. No other extra work was done - just the frame swap . Search and you should find these ...

I'm at Riverhead Toyota, on Long Island. My truck was there from October 2nd. They just started it this past Tuesday. I went down Friday and was talking to the tech working on my truck and there were 6 new Tacoma frames in the back.
