First new Tacoma/vehicle! MPG question.

So this is the first new vehicle I've ever purchased. I'm real excited, but concerned over the initial MPG that I'm getting with the V6, 4.0L. My first tank showed that I got 11 MPG. I was expecting 16-20.

For other new owners have you seen the MPG improve over time?

I have a 6spd and drive a mix of city/highway.

 

Welcome to TW, Im not sure why your mpg is that low maybe you will just need to find the right driving style for the truck because you should be able to get it into the 16-20 range fairly easy.

 

Yeah you should see it improve considerably. I have the 4.0 auto and just got a 17.5 tank, and I have a little over 5K miles. It continues to get better, as I put miles on it. I have heard some people say they have gotten 400 miles on a tank. I don't think I could ever get to that. Unless I was on the highway downhill with a tailwind! It will get better, keep your foot out of it as well!

 

Exactly what do you mean by new? Straight of the lot "new" (2009/2010) or you mean a used vehicle you bought and it has a "new" owner. If it's just brand 'new' your engine will take some time to be break-in.

 

1 tank isn't a good measurement of MPG. You'll need to track your MPG over a greater length of time.

 

Let it break in I have a 09 PreRunner and got about 10,000 miles on it and get around 19mpg and that is on the highway, also i notice a difference when i switch it synthetic oil

 

.I get 16 to 17 in city and 20 on the hwy if you keep it at about 70 on the highway...no fuel problems..

Yeah...Give it a few more tanks and pay attention to how you are driving. I have a lift and bigger tires and I get 17.5 mpgs pretty regularly.

Thanks guys. Yes, this is a new 2010. Drove it off the lot with less than 40 miles. I'm not stepping into it and drive about 70 on the interstate. Hopefully this will improve over time. Again, thanks for all of the posts.

 

I would make sure you get gas from a good gas station,

where i live valero, has been screwing up peoples gas tanks for about he last 6 months...killing there fuel filter...

 

I filled up my tacoma and I checked out my milage meter and I noticed that I get about 265 miles per tank

 

I have a scanguage hooked up to my '10 and I have noticed my mpg has increased with getting a few miles on it. I noticed a big jump right around the 500 mile mark in my avg mpg for my daily commute and another around 750. at a little over 1k I removed the 2nd air filter and immediately noticed almost a 1 mpg jump, but I haven't driven it much since then to confirm.
