Posted this in the Techn. Section and figured I'd ask here too.

I have a detroit locker I want to install in my 8.4" rear end under my taco. I bought it used and didn't come with any instructions as to how to install it.

I'm mechanically inclined and want to do it myself but couldn't find a walkthrough or how-to after searching on here and Google.

Anyone have a link that has what im looking for or can explain step by step how to go about installing it ?

Not real popular on this site. I personally really like the detroit locker but it's not an easy install. Here is a video of an arb air locker install on an 8.4. Will be fairly similar I would assume. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxiz34mSp1c

Call East Coast Gear Supply in Raleigh, NC. They are the best there is, period, when it comes to installing lockers/limited slips in Toyota axles. Very knowledgeable & very friendly. People send 3rd members to them from all over the country for installation/repairs.

I think he wants to do it on his own for a learning experience.

Nothing wrong with that. Just trying to give him some help for along the way. Installing a locker on your own without doing it before is something I wouldn't do without some help by my side. That learning experience could prove costly if installed improperly.

Installing the Detroit is not too technical. It's the gears. Actually, installing the gears is easy, it's lashing the gears that takes YEARS of experience to master. More power to you for attempting. Expect to fail and or spend A LOT of time getting it right. It's an art form more than a step by step.

BTW, Detroits are awesome. Prefer it in the front rather than an ARB. The ARB is a spool when locked. If you're trying to turn the wheel when the front is spooled, it's near impossible. You unlock the ARB but it remains spooled until it moves a bit. The Detroit on the other hand only locks under power. You back off the gas pedal and the Detroit unlocks making it very easy to manipulate and steer w/o locking and unlocking using a switch.

My preference is ARB in the rear and a Detroit in the front as long as the front drive shaft disconnects when not in 4 wheel drive or you have locking hubs that can be unlocked for street use.
