Anybody going to the Pennsylvania Auto Show this weekend in Harrisburg?

    http://autoshowharrisburg.com/?gclid=CKSuj_Dxt8MCFYY_aQodXxQA0g

We've been to this thing before out of boredom. We have a reason to go this year - as the husband is looking for some new wheels to replace his 2006 Acura MDX. He's just not sure what he wants.... new, used, which manufacturer.

Next year.... There'd better be a Limited Tacoma on site!

Anyone know the law on Auxiliary lights? This is what I found. I always thought auxiliary lights had to be covered if they weren't factory. 18d1362ab5e45c1882cd9f6784128aea_2df2eb38f0109f9da3d9fbab3cd18448aa321c1e.jpg6954b5409ae6ef828f6740bde75ccdbb_d9cf3c09d90f21faf6124ea82fc3ae40859ef3b7.jpg

    This:

    (f) Off-road lighting.--Off-road lighting lamps may be mounted on the roof or roll bar of a vehicle and shall be covered with an opaque covering that prohibits any light from being emitted when the vehicle is being operated on a highway or trafficway. Any person who illuminates an off-road lighting lamp while the vehicle is being operated on a highway or a trafficway commits a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $100.

But I don't think it's enforced very often if at all.

I have lights behind the grill and 3 rear facing lights and have never had an issue. I see the Jeeper guys around here with lights all over. I guess it just depends where you are on how strictly the laws are enforced.

If they're DOT approved you can run 4x lights at a time (High beams + 2x Aux Driving Lights) or (Low Beams + Fog Lights). There's a minimum distance apart, and for driving lights they have a maximum beam height at a certain distance from the vehicle.

It makes no sense to me that they want your high mounted Spot lights like mine at the bottom of my windshield to be tied into high beams , People forget to turn there high beams off on a dark road all the time till someone from coming the opposite direction reminds you by flashing theres . So if I had my spot lights wired into high beams , someone coming around the turn from the opposite direction I would blinded the hell out of them and they could loose control . Makes no sense to me . Your spot light are only used for off road so I would think manual operation for those light would be better for safety .

I can't comment on the roof lights (I've been told they have to be covered when not in use). We have a friend who does inspections...and some of the information he told us:

Driving lights can only be on with high beams
Fog lights can only be on with the low beams
    20" apart center to center

The Aux PIAA fog lights I have now - are wired to come on anytime, which is technically illegal. Our friend had told us, if you UNPLUG (remove the power) to the lights, you can pass inspection. So - every inspection, I pull the fuse.

Our friend doesn't actually inspect our vehicles - we've taken our stuff to a couple different places (convenience) and the auxiliary lighting issue has never been questioned. I don't even know if they 'look' to try and turn them on. I've never asked (didn't want to push the issue).

I've never been pulled over for them.... Around here, they don't seem too concerned. However.... If you've done something to get their attention, they'll nitpick at anything possible to have an excuse to pull you over.

Pretty sure va inspections are similar to pa and I never had a problem with my old light bar. Never had a cover for it also had the fog light mod when I had factory fogs. Now with led pod fogs and retrofit (both technically illegal) we'll see if they give me any trouble but I've never been hassled by a cop for either of them.

So basically if they are on the roof they need covered? Sounds like I should be OK with a 30" bar basically in my lower valance. I can't even tell my headlights or highbeams are on when I flip it on. Figured that would be a safety issues for oncoming drivers. Maybe it's not bad if I have it aimed right.

Still has to be DOT approved to use on roads. I really doubt your 30" bar is DOT approved.

Only a couple led lights are dot approved. Rigid just released them as pods. Would never run a light bar with oncoming drivers. Use it if you want but make sure to cut off if someone is coming. If you leave it on you'll probably be looking at a head on collision because you will 100% blind them

I doubt it is DOT approved as well. I would absolutely turn it off for oncoming traffic. I hate being high beamed can't imagine what a light bar would be like. Thanks for the input fellas

I turn mine off any time my lights shine on another vehicle. I left it on when I was following a car once and the people in the car were looking behind them with that, "What in the actual ckuf is that behind me?!?!?" look. There is zero cutoff on these lights so you will undoubtedly blind the ckuf out of people with them. They make improperly installed HIDs look light candles.

Unless it's changed since I did my research years ago any light above the factory headlights is supposed to be covered (unless they are something like approved plow lights).

I don't believe there are any DOT regulations regarding the illumination qualities of fog or auxiliary lights other than "The total candlepower for headlamps and auxiliary lamps shall not exceed 150,000."

Here's the part of the PA code on what lights are allowed and where:
    http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/067/chapter175/s175.66.html

And here's the requirements for lighting equipment (note fog an aux lamps are not defined):
    http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/067/chapter153/chap153toc.html
