just did it too. I hated not being able to see at night backing up, especially with bestop on. took like 10 minutes, I used wire cutters to cut the bulbs off with no issues

Just installed this on our '08. Great detail and descriptions. Dremel was a perfect tool for cutting out the halogen bulb. Didn't need a screw driver on our setup, just the 10mm socket wrench. Now I can actually see through the tint! Thanks!

Anyone had any issues with the housings melting from the heat of these higher watt bulbs?

AR15 someone in the first few pages mentioned a good point, the reverse lights shouldn't be on long enough to melt anything. Also none have reported an issue yet and this thread is quite old. I assume these are a cheaper option than LED replacements and cost less?

What if you have to back up for a long period of time? Like a long driveway....

No known LED replacements have been devised that are any brighter than stock

I've had mine in for a while now and yet to have an issue and when wheeling I'm sure I've left them on for a while before.

nope, but i am using the 35watt ones. Output is SO MUCH better than my moms 07 4 runner.... backed that thing up the other night and thought both reverse lights were out.

Same here. Couple years with no issues with the 35watt! Plenty of long backups in the woods at slow speeds! All good so far! Excellent lighting!:D

Yes, yes you can. Especially since I'll be tinting at some point.

These are the ones I used! My understanding is the 50watters will be too hot, and melt the housings!:p

So this mod can be done for under $20?

I see none on Amazon that are halogen and are around 35watt

I don't remember how much they were! Short term, or any term for that matter, memory sucks! Might've been due to something I smoked?

No melting with my 894s (37.5 watt), it still makes smile when I shift into reverse after dark - every time. :) And it's been over two years.

I've left the truck in reverse with the engine off a few times to use them as work / loading lights a few times too, close to ten minutes continuously. Zero regrets on this mod here.

Just ordered 3 886's (35w) off of Amazon. Doing this mod as soon as they come in. Backing up with the slide-in camper and reduced visibility will be much better now. Nice write-up and thanks for everyone's feedback and experience. TWFTW
