I know how this happened. Its those dang automatic transmission vehicles. The things drive themselves! I'm being serious here, not joking around.

Another reason I won't own an automatic as long as possible.

As you know, When/if the vehicle is under WOT condition (which I am asuming is the case during an experiance like this), the brake booster is not getting replenished, as the engine does not produce vacuum at or near WOT. In my truck, I have noticed I have about 3 good brake applications before the booster is depleted of vacuum assist. The third application is about half power of the first. When depleted, and even giving my truck half throttle, I was not strong enough to stop the vehicle while pushing the brakes, and the truck accelerated very well. I think there needs to be a more "Idiot proof" stopping system (engine shut down, etc.) on these newer vehicles. In a situation like those people were in, panick sets in, and Im sure, they had no idea that to shut off the engine required a push of the "ON" button for 3 seconds. WHICH....at 120 mph, is a LONG time. :(

it was cause of the push button ignition in those lexus's.. but.. the 911 guy shoulda told them to do the neutral thing.. all he said was "do you ahve a way to pull off the road?" I think he shoulda told them how to disable the car.. ebrake, neutral.. somethin..? BUT no matter what, it didnt happen, and that is damn chilling to hear those last words.. :(

I know in a time of panic you may not always think strait. Neutral would have been my first choice, but I would also wonder why am I accelerating? If I didn't feel the pedal where it should be I would focus on the pedal. The last thing on my mind would be to call someone and tell them my problem. I have had rolling objects fall behind my brake pedal before. It surprised the crap out of me but thinking fast I figured something must be behind the pedal, removed the object, and went along my day. This problem with the mats should be fixed and good for Toyota even in these hard times to do a recall. My sympathy goes out to those people and there family. It is hard to loose a family member and even worse if you lose more.

This is true, and I failed to think of the fact that you will have a vacuum loss at WOT. Most vacuum reservoirs do have a check valve to prevent from replenish the reservoir though. On the same topic, I had a belt get thrown on my 2500HD last year and it took everything I had to get it stopped from 70 MPH (in heavy traffic) without causing an accident. Steering also isn't very easy in a truck with 34" tires.

I drove a car just last week that would not allow the vehicle to go into neutral unless it was stopped and the brake was applied.

everyone ask how this could happen to a CHP officer. a CHP officer, out of his uniform, is a regular person. they react the same way a regular person would. the badge and gun doesn't answer all the questions in the world. yes, sure they are highly trained but they are trained to do law enforcement. they aren't trained in situation where they are in a car that's going 120mph with no breaks. i'm sure he did try to press the breaks but when your gas pedal is down and your brakes are down your brake pads are gonna heat up and will be no use. i'm sure he thought of everything. if you hit the car into neutral but your already going 100 mph it's still going to take some time to go down in speed. the guy didn't have a long enough distance to stop. also at the same time he probably didnn't know if the car will blow up. i remember a couple years ago a girl crashed into a tree with some of her friends in the car. when she regained consciousness she tried to turn the car back on and the car blew up. it took the lives of 5 high school teenage girls. we can monday morning quarterback what the CHP officer could have done but until your put into that situation you will not know how to react. I agree that he could have turned the car off but at the same i didn't know you had to hold the button for 3 seconds to turn the car off so you can think he didn't know either. sorry for the rant. keep in mind the car was a loaner. believe me, i was irritated about the dispatcher as well but remember these are high stress situation and if you haven't been in it you won't know how you'll react. i'm sure he did everything he can to save his life and the lives of his passengers.

You know, my sister had a loaner TL that has a push start. My first thought when we were driving was "will it turn off if I press it and wer're in motion?", we didn't try, but I know by instinct I would have held the fuck out of that button if I needed the car to shut off.
