When you think about the time/scariness of trying to jerryrig it, it's really not that much of a pain to take out...

Not worried about the time/pain in the ass of removal, I'm just curious if it works. I took them off for install of course, but if I'm not changing anything but a preload setting I wonder if there's an different way to do only that.

If it's sketchy I won't attempt it, but if all seems in reality as it does in my head, I don't see why it wouldn't work or why it's dangerous. Only risk would seem that the spring compressor shears and the coil is allowed to explosively decompress, but that's a really slim possibility and isn't specific to this particular method, that's the spring compressor's risk. I'd only be compressing it an extra 2 inches or so, just enough to remove the clip, slide the perch up to the next setting and reinstall the clip. Once the spring is actually compressed, it should take less than a minute.

Should work. If the spring were to decompress it would only go so far as the spring perch anyway?

Tell me if I'm missing something, please! :)

To me it doesn't seem any more dangerous than doing a total uninstall/reinstall which is reasonably minimal if you pay any attention. The spring compressors are kinda janky, so that (to me) is the only calculated risk of my idea, but doing a full removal of the strut isn't removing that danger either so IMO it's a wash. That said, the compressor is brand new and I'd be cranking it down with a hand tool (as recommended by the manufacturer) so as long as I keep things evenly torque'd it seems to be an effective way to reset the preload clip.

Hopefully I don't sound sold on the idea like it's the only way to do it, I'm genuinely curious if it's possible. I'm just curious what you guys see that I don't, I don't want to be so focused on the idea that I blur the edges of things and get tunnel vision.

Aside from the spring compressor being a possible point of danger, everything else seems perfectly fine. Or no?

Remove wheel. Attach compressor to coil. Tighten bolts and compress spring until perch can be moved approximately 1 inch. Remove preload clip from 5100 body. Slide perch up, insert clip into 1.75 preload notch. Loosen bolts and decompress spring until seated. Install wheel. Get aligned.

    What am I not seeing?

You could do it but since the 5100 is stock travel I'm wondering if you can move the ring all the way up without having to pull on the shock itself to get enough space to move that ring. Does that make sense?

Yeah it does, I don't know if that'll be an issue, I'd think not though?

Raining this weekend and I'm supposed to officially move into/start living in the new house, so won't be this week. Maybe next Friday, unless there's a ton of other shit to do which is likely and possible.

I just feel like its gonna be hard to fit the spring compressors in there...

I'm not sure either. Hopefully they can, and I can see if this actually works. If not, no big deal, I'll break out the toolbox.

Mine could barely maintain 90 going up a hill in 4th. So I hear you there! And mine weren't even thaaaat bad.

I don't think my clutch was fully disengaging with the pressure plate how it was, with the new clutch it shifts sooooo much smoother and awesomer. It's sitting pretty now with more than 800 dollars in to it this weekend.

I just don't know how to tell if they're really bad... Mitch did you just change out the hub or actually do the bearing?

I was at 160k miles on my T100 with factory hubs and bearings, at 121k now on factory ones, not sure why a lot of peoples go bad before 100k?
