Tacoma died

Truck died driving down the street.
Gas is good , can anyone give me anything to look at before i decide to tow it home or to the local dealer. Thanks

Erm... could be anything... did your battery light come on? Alternator? More info would help...

 

Were you literally just driving along and it died on you?

 

my guess is alternator, the truck used up the battery, then all gauges stopped and it got hard to steer with pwr steering going out -when you said it just died-

did it spit/sputter or misfire while you were driving?

 

With something as complex as a vehicle...just saying "it died, what to look for" leaves a lot on the table.

Can you tell us what happened just before it died? or anything strange that happened in the days/weeks prior?

 

No lights appeared in dash cluster.. I just noticed when pushing on gas pedel i wasnt gaining momentum , looked at tach and no rpms but engine was still running. So i pulled off road and engine died and will nit start. Acts like out of gas but guage says quarter tank.

 

Battery spins th engine fine.

 

Sounds like an alternator. That's what mine did. All gauges went flat. Surged like out of gas. Had to limp it back to town and then died in an intersection. The only thing powering the vehicle was the battery.

You're sure there's no red battery light on?

 

i had the same symptoms in my old f150, it was the alternator. start simple, pull the alternator and have it tested at an autoparts store.

Most autoparts stores can test the alternator if your battery is charged.

 

Alternator got me on my last Tacoma. Same exact diagnosis as mentioned earlier.

 

will the engine crank at all now?

 

All I can tell you is something isn't working..........

Hmm. Battery terminals and cables are to blame very often with modern cars. Next thing (after that) I would suspect is EFI system. I would try swapping EFI fuse and relay with another one that is the same (AC).
Honestly, though it could be anything. Good luck.

 

If not battery, and it's alternator there should be a battery light that comes on. Happened to me in Hollister.

 

After sitting for a few minutes I tried to start the engine, it turned over and ran rough like out of gas, had son bring me a couple gallons and it fired right up and is running normal now ,the fuel guage was setting just below 1/4 mark when this happened, I won't let it get below half tank anymore,.thanks for the responses.

Great! Glad you got it figured out. Sucks about the gas gauge though, my 1990 yota was like that and it drove me crazy!
