This past weekend I hauled a load of wood from Sanford to Raleigh, let it sit in the truck for a week, and then Raleigh to Merchant's Millpond. When I was just about at my destination I started to hear and feel a clunk or pop in the floorboard under my left foot, like someone hit the floorboard with a hammer, when hitting some bumps. It is an intermittent sound as not all bumps make it happen. Even after unloading I still heard the noise occasionally.

I've read a lot of posts with similar predicaments, sway bar end links, ball joints, rear shocks, loose battery, etc. Everything on my truck seems ok and I haven't heard it since I got back home.

And the tale of the phantom noise will continue.

The list to removing the noise:
    1. Visual inspection of front and rear suspension (shocks, ball joints, Control arm bolts, etc) - X
    2. Lift vehicle and test front suspension for worn parts (ball joints, hub bearing, etc) - X

    3. Re-torque body mounts (BensonX) - In Progress
    4. Replace LCA CAMS and bushings and retorque (LCA Cams are frozen) - In Progress

Check your upper and lower CV bolts are tighted to spec and whether your bushings are worn.

Just took a hard/fast left turn (caught a yellow light) through a rippled intersection and heard/felt it pop a couple times. Dry road, no snow, truck unloaded.

Think he means upper and lower control arms?

I know the lowers can cause a popping noise. Torquing these resolves it for some people.

And what is your definition of checking the lower and upper ball joints?

Pretty standard thing to check. Similar to how he does it.

I had one I just solved yesterday night.

It was the LCA cam bolt, jacked up front of truck and torqued all the alignment cam bolts to 100 ft lbs (155 ft lbs if you are 2wd) and it went away.

Good deal  Some people are visual checkers..

If your lca bolts are seized maybe one of the bushings collapsed? But, I think if you were rocking the wheel in a vertical position you would feel it. Along with the ball joints, wheel bearing also. Really a good checking for everything..

My guess is ball joints. I had the same thing with the floor board pop. It was especially bad for a day or so after hauling a load. I greased the ball joints (you have to pierce the boot) and it went away. You can rock the truck back and forth and try to simulate it (have someone down underneath the truck listening); you get a good work out if it takes a few minutes of rocking to pin point it.

    Hey Sandman,

I just wanted to say hey and say that I am in the Chapel Hill area (when I am not back in Alabama). New to the taco owner world but I am loving it so far. Hope you get your noise figured out!!

My lower control arm bolts had loosened recently too. Had to torque them up and my pop in drivers side went away. That's what I would check first.

I'll go about the lower ball joints after I get my lca cams replaced. One thing at a time.

How big are your tires. You may have just hit the fender liner or something like that.
