He could have said 4". I have studded Winter tires, and still have to shift it into 4hi about 10 times a day, if I don't want to spend the next five minutes dicking around, trying to find traction on anything more than a dusting of snow (my truck sees about 100 miles of snow/ice packed roads a day).

My nine month average is in my sig. Note the number of fuel ups, it balances out the fill level, the way the truck is parked at the pump, etc.

For a 4300lbs truck that has all of 236hp, it's not great...

You need a highway with mile markers every mile. Pull over at one, clear your trip odometer, write down the mile marker, and drive at least 25 miles.
If multi-lane highway, stay in the right lane. For example, if your beginning mile marker was 10, pull over at mile marker 35, for 25 true miles. Compare your trip odometer. If it doesn't show exactly 25.0, say 26.0, you were off 1.0 miles, and your odometer recording more miles than you actually drove. Multiply by 4. Your error is 4%. If it shows less than 25, say 23.0, you are off 2 so your error is 8%, and the odometer is reporting less than you actually drove.

I think this is at least as accurate as GPS, since unless you are on a pretty straight road, GPS may introduce some error.
