It will end when people stop putting their entire lives online.

To have health insurance, you need to provide the insurance company with your personal information. In this case, I am not putting my life online. I am doing business with a company and trusting that our information is protected. Unfortunately, the entire world is connected and companies can be hacked. putting my "life online" would be like me posting my social security number on facebook. However, this is more of a case of being the victim of a criminal attack.

my "when will it end" comment was in reference to companies being hacked. barring getting rid of the internet, how will we ever stop it?

I don't think it'll ever end. Companies need to understand that IT is the core of their business and by not adequately funding the hardware, the technicians and training they are failing. They may be making the profits and appeasing their shareholders but the feel that this is an acceptable risk.
