and they went 10 years with the 1st gen Tacoma also without an update when there was a Ranger S10/Sonoma Dakota and Frontier....its not because there was no competition. Why are people surprised it went that long...geeezzzz!!

I'm not sure what that has to do with Chevy making a commercial about women sitting around table saying the dude by the truck is who they want, even though it's the same guy.

Absolutely I hope that it does put some pressure on Toyota, and I hope the market get bigger.

What will happen though. Who knows.. We MAY avoid the ridgeline because look at the sales, its not a hit. Tacoma is not a grand slam but still has a good market share and production numbers to warrant Toyota keeps making it, if not trying to improve it.

If the sales ever dropped from not updating it, it may just be abandoned for the US market.

The first gen however received updates, 2000 was a substantial update with a new interior, exterior and engine and the introduction of the double cab. The second gen on the other hand was ignored, they introduced a new version of the 1GR-FE in 2010 and put it in the 4-runner, FJ-Cruiser and Tundra but not the Tacoma. It has everything to do with competition. The only update it received as a new grill and eventually the introduction of some more trim levels and a nav system in 2012.

The other trucks unfortunately were not competitive, their quality and reliability was beyond awful and Ford didn't update the ranger for 20 years. At the time Toyota thrived off this competition building a better truck than their that did so well that it destroyed the competition stealing the Ford ranger's market share.

1st gen had more updates than second during the gen itself.

The market was already Toyota's so they have not tried as hard as they could have.

    gen 3 truck 1979-83 1 moderate update/facelift in 1981
    -facelift
    -engine
    -options

-85 major engine change (short deck)

    -88 new engine (v6 3.slow)

gen 5 truck 1989-95 minor changes

    gen 1 Tacoma 1995.5-2004 1 moderate update

Want to know what I think would be a (Serious) competitor?? Imagine if Ford made a Mid size Raptor with a V6 Ecoboost. A mini me in looks etc of existing Raptor, bet they couldn't make em fast enough...

Right but the Tacoma is the direct replacement and descendant of the pickup in the US market. The name change was marketing, and then with 2nd gen Tacoma they became US only, 1st gen was still shared platform with Hilux same as pickup.

And the 3 gens of 4x4 pickup, and first gen Tacoma is what gave Toyota its rep and the market. Along with the domestic failure in said market.

What is seen cannot be unseen lol. I like the ZR 2 concept as well and I'm hoping Toyota will up there game to match it if the ZR 2 enters production.

LOL...I'm not slamming GM or boasting about my Tacoma....I'm simply posting the facts about what I have read and heard about on the Colorado/Canyon Fans forum, which I happen to be a member of - as I also own a Canyon.

You should be a politician, the sly ways you have just twisted the truth! ;)

I "use my truck". And it breaks. My other one did too. A lot. My neighbour's is a grocery getter, '13 DCLB TRD Sport, and had the automatic transmission eat itself up at six thousand miles. They are not indestructible, not by a long shot.

I like the size factor of the Tacoma, and the extended warranty (that my dealer has to jump through hoops to get by the bean counters at corporate to honour). Up to now, they had no competition.

Not saying that I will make the jump to, but I will investigate, the GM twins when trade in time comes.

True. And you can easily tell when they have 6 inch drop bracket lifts on 20 inch rims with fake projector headlights from eBay. #mallcrawler.

There still aren't many Colorado's or Canyons sitting on local lots around me yet. I'm sure that hampers sales. The local Chevy dealer seems to have no problems selling Colorado's, I've seen three with sold signs in the windows in the last two weeks. That's all the trucks they've received.

Last time I was in the city though there were still the same two Canyons sitting at the GMC dealer as there was last week, and that dealership does far more volume than the one in my local town...

The comparsion between commuter cars, target audience, the market they are playing too. Or guys who see that see girls talking about the good looking guy with the colorado and think I should get one of those. Again for those non informed buyers who buy for image or the way it looks and rides rather than truck features.

    I see what you're saying.

It would certainly seem that they realize they aren't gonna get the majority of the Tacoma crowd. Going after bored guys in civics and tercels.

Let me guess, the head failure that they all did? Mine did that at 5 yrs 75k and GM told me to fuck off till I shoved the bulletin in their faces. The "free" fix cost me 2 grand for all the other stuff it broke. That was "normal"..yeah. Traded it on my 10 Tacoma and love it.

I would like the competition yes. I'll never own a GM again as my daily after the fiasco I just mentioned above though.

It is too soon to consider this failed by a long shot. I never trust 1st year vehicles in general anyways so even if I wanted one I would not buy one now.

Guys......first of all, it's a TV commercial. It's not real. The fact that I'm even having to post this is absurd.

Second....as we previously stated earlier in the thread, most people don't haul ANYTHING with their truck and COULD get along just fine with a civic. That represents the overwhelming majority of the market. And yes, the "market" even includes our beloved Tacoma World. 90% of the guys on this forum will NEVER tow anything.....ever. I'll even admit that I don't tow anything. I use the bed for 3 things. 1) Hauling my mountain bike when I ride (like every week) 2) Buying wood to build speakers. 3) Moving furniture. And even I find myself wondering if I truly need the bed.

So without a doubt, Chevy is 100% right when they say, "You know you want a truck." They are marketing to the people who WANT a truck but don't NEED a truck. And basic statistical analysis will show us that it represents a much larger piece of the market than the people who NEED a truck.

PS: I say all of this knowing the Tacoma can't tow a damn thing and has open diffs (not even LSD) in all but the OR models. Let's be frank, our trucks fall into the mall crawler/grocery getter category too.
