Is aluminum strong enough to be a skid??

Yes, but you would typically make it from a thicker plate (1/4").

Oh that makes sense, it would be sweet to not have to deal with rust and the extra weight

I think that if you are into rock crawling and heavy wheeling that steel is the way to go. 3/16" is heavy but will take a beating for that type of use. For me, I do more exploration on fire roads and mellow 4x4 trails.

I don't enjoy rock crawling type stuff or need the skids for it but I do like the peace of mind extra protection offers. Like you mentioned, aluminum is lighter and won't corrode like steel so for my uses it is perfect.

The 1/4" aluminum skid I have is lighter than the 8-9 gauge steel and is probably close in strength. It should be fine for anything I will ever put it through.

Yeah, that's him. He blew up his front diff and that turned into a flat belly, dove nose, and a few other things. It looks like a rocket to me haha

Are you planning on making a handful of the new aluminum version to sell to locals?

I am likely going to make a handful. If some locals want to go in I am more than happy to work something out.

    Should fit 2005-2015.

I definitely would be interested.. Been lookin at getting some skids, but don't need the full gauge thickness as I don't rock crawl either. Just for the peace of mind added protection.

Thanks again for the roof rack, it's served me very well & holding up strong!
