How do you know your highway mpg? Also, I am curious as to how you could get that well at 65 and 70. I can barely do that if every condition is right, and I have highway tires and a tonneau (I tested it, it did improve high speed mpg).

I use a calculator and at fill up divide the number of gallons into the miles driven. One more thing I also run 40 pounds cold pressure in my tires. Yes they are over inflated a little, but I am after the MPG. As for a Tonneau cover the MPG gain is at higher speeds but very little at that. At lower speeds it is a wash according to studies. http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/blog/the-tonneau-cover-fuel-economy-myth/
The problem with higher speeds is you have already lowered your MPG and are just gaining a little MPG on the lower amount. So unless they can give some gain to the best MPG range I am not sure they are a benefit for MPG. I do think they look nice and make for dry storage, but I would not buy one for MPG purposes as I do not drive the higher speeds.

This! City driving is THE MPG killer but going over 70 degrades it fast as well.

During the summer when I'm doing highway driving at 70 mph I get a consistent 22mpgs.

Right now in the winter with highway I'm getting about 18.5 mpgs.

    Love it.

    Back on Topic.

Staying at 65 Will help your mileage. I can average 20-21 on the highway at 65MPH, anything above that is drops off.

I tested the cover at 60 mph and 70 mph. I haven't hammered it out to the decimal yet but there was around 1 mpg gain at 60mpg and 2 at 70 mph. The cover will do nothing at low speeds because it only improves aerodynamics, and theoretically would decrease at low speeds due to weight. I always go 60 so that 1mpg is worth it to me and for $150 cover, I'm satisfied. For road trips or hauling people I go faster as a courtesy, because when you're not driving 60 is really annoying :anonymous: so the cover helps there too.
I am looking to add an aero cap in the future which is the hands down best drag improvement.

Interesting on the tires, I used to run 45 and 47 and I noticed increase Treadwear in the middle so I stopped... tires cost more than gas :(

that's really awesome you do so well with a manual. You would really like an ultragauge, I bet it would improve even your driving habits.

I can't get that at 70. I was at like 17-18 and with the cover, 20.

I also have a cover, but I don't know how much it helps with this truck. I had it on my last Tacoma and I did notice a slight improvement in gas mileage. I took the cover off the last truck and put it on my current truck as soon as I got it, so I never got to check if it helped. I assume it does.

It helps 1-2 hwy which means you would probably be lucky to see .5 increase in mixed. But since I'm not getting a different truck anytime soon I don't mind.

Thanks for that information. I have never heard of the aero cap so I am trying to do some research. I found this link which is very interesting. http://ecomodder.com/blog/aerocaps-for-pick-up-trucks/
