California has a provincial driver license.

You're eligible to test for your driver license at 16 after you've received the learner permit, completed Driver's Education, and completed 3 driving sessions with an instructor. You also must have X hours of drive time behind the wheel with your parents (don't remember what the amount is).

Once all of that is completed, you take the drive test. Successful completion gets you your provincial driver license. You can drive alone, between I think it's 7 am and 8 pm. Any other time and with other people as long as a licensed driver 25 or older is in the front seat. After 6 months the license turns into a "regular" driver license.

Until you turn 21, your driver license is printed vertically and states very clearly the year you turn 21.

You can get your permit here after passing a super easy written test at 15 and 6 months. You can only drive with someone over 21 in the car.

Once you're 16 (and have had the permit for at least 6 months) you can take the (stupidly easy) driving test at any mvd and get your license. For the first 6 months you're supposed to only have 1 passenger max except immediate family and you have to follow curfew laws

No wonder there are so many terrible drivers here

IIRC it's 60 hours total, 40 hours daytime and 20 hours night.
I drove ~30 hours total, most was at night and they didn't care.
