Spare Key

I have a 2007 Tacoma. Do I really have to buy a very expensive key from the dealer to have another spare key? My wife carries my current extra key. So I want to get another to carry on me for a spare. I went to Lowes and they said they couldn't make a spare key. Instead I have to get it from the dealer. I sthat true? $100 for a spare key?

 

yes, because it has a special sensor in it that can only be recognized if you have that key from the dealer with the sensor. i dont have to get that because my truck is so basic its funny. but your truck and many other vehicles now have this technology to prevent car thiefs. so, yeah, hate to say it bro, but your gonna have to go buy the key to get a spare made.

 

i had an extra made at home depot for a couple bucks. works just fine. i have an 09 a/c. this is the first i have heard of anything like that. i am a newb though.

 

You have the 5 Lug so it probably doesn't have the sensor.

 

I know our national hardware store, Canadian Tire, will do sensor keys for you. Not sure what they charge, but apparently it's less than dealerships.

I can't see why they would have this in the states too.

 

You can get it done at a locksmith shop that has the ability to copy these keys, not a lot do it due to the cost of the equipment, so try calling around your area and asking.

 

They also sell Toyota Tacoma keys with the sensor in them on E-Bay, then all you have to do is get them cut to fit your specific Taco.

 

In my area I have also seen hardware stores start selling chipped keys. $35 at an Ace Hardware if I remember correctly.

 

Yes, But you would have to program the chip in the blank after it was cut..
Not to hard, requires two keys you might already have.
but you may not need to program it.

You still need to have them programmed, not just cut.

 

I just want a spare that will open the door if I lock my keys in my truck.
I don't need a key with a sensor for that, do I

Where did you get it made, at a local hardware store?
Were they able to cut it from the sensor key?
What was the cost?

I got mine made at HomeDepot. Yes, they cut mine using my original sensored key.

You'll have to explain - to him/her - that the key you need is only for opening the door and that you don't need the sensor in it.

 

Not sure if this will work on a Toyota but it worked on my wifes old Montero.
I bought a chipped key online for somewhere around $30.
I had two programmed keys already for the vehicle.
When the key arrived I had a locksmith cut it to match the original keys. They didn't even charge me cause they said it might not work and they couldn't guarantee it.
I put in the first programmed key in the ignition, turned the ignition to on (didn't start it), turned it off, plugged in the second programmed key into the ignition and turned it on (didn't start it), turned it off, then plugged in the new cut key that hadn't been programmed yet, and turned the ignition on. The Montero's computer then programmed the key for me.
I took the key out and plugged it back into the ignition and was able to start it up with no problems.
Only reason I needed an extra programmed key was for the remote starter I was having installed on it.
Again, not sure if Toyota computers will allow this, but Mitsubishi worked perfectly.
You can probably google Toyota program key and find something out there.

I have a 09, no sensor in the key.

Easy way to tell is the width of the head of the key.

Thick - sensor.

Thin - Not.

Got mine done at Home Depot for under $2 each.

If you hide the key with the sensor in the car you can still use a key without the sensor.
example :
you and your wife have two keys without sensors and hide the key with the sensor in the truck.
But be warned that someone can find the key and startit right up
and $100 is not that bad i had a dodge caliber and i was geting a remote start installed and need to hide a key in the car it cost $185.
