It starts correctly now, thanks to the best dealer tech ever.
In thinking more about what mechanic told us about depressing accelerator pedal at hard warm start times, I remember where the confusion came from now - we took him to mean hold it down while turning key, but then husband did this and the truck seemed like it was going to launch into space it started so fast! So that kinda freaked us out and then we told ourselves maybe we misunderstood him, and instead should press it down for bit to let some air in, then let up off it, then start. But doing that seems to cause all of zero improvement on the excessive crank time.

I guess he must have meant keep it down and have it roar to life VERY SUDDENLY?

Anyway, FWIW. Not sharing this just for laughs, or just to explain why we are goofy and misunderstand things, although those are nice side benefits. :)

Wanted to share in case it means anything to someone as a helpful clue, that it literally ROARS TO LIFE INSTANTLY if pedal is depressed WHILE cranking (but not if only depressed then released BEFORE cranking).

    Yeah.
Hmm, that is interesting. I forget if the old 3.4 has a mechanical butterfly for airflow. Even if not, maybe the butterfly is a little sticky or just not hitting the right position? A warm start would not need a choke, so if it sticks shut or is sluggish (until it has a signal to go wide open, like depressing the pedal), that could be an issue. Usually that trick was used on carbureted engines when they get flooded, but it could have some effect on older EFI as well.

This is a great mystery novel, but it needs a Cliff Notes summary someday.

You're telling me! If we can ever get the damn thing fixed, I plan to write a summary as the final post, so other poor souls who are dealing with similar crappy issues can skip right to that - if everyone did that on all the threads I've read in the last 2.5 months, wow, I'd have a lot of extra time. :)

OK, TW break time - been promising my husband I'd make lasagna for a good week now, and somehow I keep getting distracted by.........hmmm.........not sure.....something.........keeps drawing me back to my computer.......followed by Haynes manual/FSM couch time......

Also making a cheesecake! Husband got jealous of how yummy looking the one for our mechanic was - figure since he swapped coil packs, plug wires, plugs, changed oil, drained coolant/swapped thermostat, tested MAF, and checked timing, he's earned a dessert, right?

Time to crank up the Waylon!!

This has been a highly technical, critically important post regarding detailed automotive diagnostic information. Thank you for reading. Hope it was informative!

Then bitched husband out for not calling to tell me he'd be late :D

you ever tried frying biscuit dough in hot grease? grandma used to make em

cut them in quarters or cut 3/4" circle out of the middles and fry them (or the middle stays raw) and then powder sugar or icing and they taste just like doughnut shop doughnut holes ready in seconds anytime

oh good god, trying this as soon as the cheesecake is gone. That's the only rule in this house - not having 2 dessert type items at once. otherwise, live it up!! :):):):)

Rolls were fine, just sitting real close together on one side. Cookies kinda look like they had it pretty rough. Still, looking forward to dunking in my coffee in the AM.

Whoa! Husband just showed me what he meant about the hood, and it doesn't sit flush with the rest of the body of the truck anymore when closed! And it doesn't pop up at all - you literally have to wiggle your fingers under just to pop the latch! Not normal or even close for sure. Hmm. Definitely wasn't like this before. Don't know if it's something or not, but it is NOT normal.

    Husband Edit:
We also discovered a couple of labels under the hood (in addition to a bunch of "nummi" labels with our VIN printed on them (CA USA Toyota/Ford experiment manufacturing plant)). If I were to guess, one label is saying we don't have an EGR, and the other is telling us how our EVAP is routed. I was wondering if there was a simple pinch test that could tel us if the EVAP system was working proper? Thank you for all of your help.

It was a GM and Toyota plant. GM wanted to learn about Japanese manufacturing practices and Toyota wanted to gain experience with American workers. Hence NUMMI was born.

Ford wanted nothing to do with a plant in CA, for many of the same reasons why Tesla is now looking to move production out of the old NUMMI plant and into Nevada.

As for the rest it may as well be in Japanese. I hate auto codes. The diagram is nice I guess if you have a vac leak and want to follow to hoses. Sorry :(

    its typical for Toyotas.

if the hood is too low turn the hood bumper stops. the screw in or out. at first it doesn't look like its doing anything but it does.

for the hood to pop up just oil the shit out of the latch everywhere anything moves. it most likely got pressure washed (not likely since everything was left dirty) or maybe it was left exposed in the weather and needs lube now.

if the hood is too high then the main support brace under the latch is too high and needs to be lowered to fix it. maybe things got bent but its just this one brace you need to readjust or refit.

mine is messed up and "one day" i'll get around to redrill or elongate the bottom bolt hole so I can lower the bracket 1/4". if hood is too high the bracket needs to go down, if its too low it needs to go up. if the hood doesn't pop up a "little" on its own then the bumper stops need adjusting. just don't go messing with the top bolts, they just fit one way and that's it and if you mess with it you get everything messed up and the hood may not latch well

started it cold this morning. shut it off then immediately popped the hood just enough to try to line it up the way it should sit when closed. OMG i am shaking right now i am so excited

started it 1/2 hour later, which was just now - excessive cranking, but we got a CEL!!! and got the code for throttle position sensor!!!! feared it'd be some damn code for "your hood is up idiot" but no, an actual code that might be the key!!!!

holy fuck what does this mean? could something with that sensor have been getting smashed when the hood was closed from it closing too tightly?????
