Agreed. My dad has an 08 Dodge 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins with an EFI live economy tune (good for 420HP) and he regularly gets 19mpg unloaded, and low teens when towing. That's much better than stock. He got 8 mpg on the tank before I tuned it. EIGHT. Unloaded. The gas version isn't much better.

I believe it, my 24V got 18-21 mpg with 35's and a heavy ass flatbed. When you get rid of emissions and throw some clean tunes in these new trucks they are freakin tanks.

My brothers best friend is a Ford master mech. He said that if you do the egr delete kit, you'll go from 10mpg to about 26mpg (average) averaged also will Get about 12-15 more horse power with no worries in the future of having to do manual cleanings ect. My bbrother I'd 1100 for him to do it and says it's the best thing for it. Fyi

Yeah I know it's the best thing for them. My dad averages like 14 DD I think. Stupid emissions. He just doesn't wanna roll coal everywhere which Im telling him he won't because it's a *good* running diesel!

Regarding the auto show that's some cool stuff. Hate the jeep and the drop bracketed Datsun. And then 71k for a Tahoe?!? What???

Check out Idaho Rob's EFI Live tunes. No smoke! I have the DSP5 switch in the Duramax, and even on the 480hp tune there is zero smoke. http://atptrucks.com/

Awesome! So it fully removes the DPF filter and all that jazz? I also believe the cummins recycles exhaust back through the intake right?

You have to physically remove the DPF (it's kind of like a cat on your taco) and yes, it has an EGR that should be deleted as well. So you need an Autocal to load the EFI live tune, new exhaust to replace the DPF, and an EGR delete kit. You can also tune up to 8 VIN's with one autocal, so if you have buddies it's smart to do a GB deal. The nicest thing about it is the 5 position switch. Mine are

    1. Economy
    2. Light tow
    3. Heavy tow
    4. Street performance
    5. Race/kill tires

You can have each position be whatever tune you want though.

    You bastard.

I wish it was that easy with marine engines.

Our two John Deere auxiliaries are 100% electronic, and the small electrically operated orifices on the injection pumps are proving to be a real mother fucker when confronted with ANY impurities in fuel. Which, happens more than you would think up here. Already gone through 2 individual injector pumps on each engine over 3 years of service life. Even more crazy was the fact that it was literally like pulling teeth to get the local service tech to flash the ECU to allow for a two stage idle. According to the EPA, these engines MUST go from a 0 RPM state to 1800 RPM as soon as they are started. Even if they haven't been run for 6 months and it's 0 degrees. Under the Tier 3 emissions, they weren't rated to run at anything less than 1800 RPM. It's insane...

Our main engine is still a fully mechanical Komatsu copy of a Cummins, inline 6 (16 liter) 750 HP @ 1600 RPM. It's a beast. Cast iron pistons.

The emissions controls that have been put in place on road diesels is starting to trickle down to marine diesels in a big way. Some of the manufacturers are looking to high pressure common rail technology - but quite frankly, I don't like the overall idea of it. It's impossible to do any type of field service on just about any system on the engine. Engines like the Caterpillar 3512, that used to make 1500 HP are now making 1100 HP with the added hindering nature of BS emissions controls.

    Sorry for the rant.

I hear ya man. I work on industrial generators with similar motors, just not quite on that scale. This one is an 855ci Cummins with a measly 375hp at 1800 rpm.

Interestingly, the emissions BS hasn't found it's way onto emergency generators yet. It is frustrating that all of this emissions equipment, especially with diesels, cannot be made reliable. Another thing that I don't get is that if it causes you to burn more fuel your overall emissions actually go UP. I'm all about making motors that save the planet, as long as fuel range and power increase! The two things are not mutually exclusive.
