I shoveled and rock salted mine twice. This time I just used the magnesium shit. This spring I plan on making the attic a conditioned space, basically add more insulation. You are losing heat from the house to the attic causing the melt and freeze. Plus aluminum gutters freeze before the old wood gutters.

I need a really tall ladder. My roof is too high, and we have 7-9" of ice on the roof

Roof rake... I've tried the roof tabs they helped a little but not enough.. I've heard it's not good to throw salt on the roof but calcium chloride is fine...I've als heard filling up pantyhose with calcium chloride and lay them parallel a few feet above the ice dam....I just stick to the roof rake, keeping the 1st 3-4 of the roof clear...

I've attached an old plastic container like from cream cheese to a pole with hose clamps and used that to sprinkle ice melt along the gutter to melt the ice. Just keep putting ice melt on there. Obviously try to remove any snow that you can first with the roof rake.

I shoveled my roof off yesterday afternoon. Took me about 2.5 hours of working steadily to do the whole thing. Felt like an old man this morning, too. I was a bit stiff getting out of bed. It took me three tries to touch my toes, haha!

Once I was done, I bucketed the snow out from in front of the cellar door with the tractor.

Roof rake and melt it off! Put rock salt in a stocking and lay it out just above the ice dam, it'll help melt it away. In the future, that heat wire might not be a bad option if you can't stop the issue by insulating. This winter is tough though. I'm getting ice dams and I've never had them before.
Denis, see above, save yourself some money. Stockings and rock salt will do the same thing.

There are a few people at my work who call out every time it snows. On Monday, 13 people called out from my building, and 60 called out in our other building.

In my office it's a pair of women. They call out whenever it snows hard enough for school to be canceled. They're single parents, but they pay a daycare for a reason...
But, they're constantly late anyway, leave early on a regular basis, and have a lousy work ethic, so I'm sure they're glad for the excuse to take a day off.

Im not defending them but daycares are pretty awful. Ours is always closing whenever they have an excuse. In fact, they are closed Monday and both my wife and I have to work.

    Lol. No disagreement, but...
All three girls in the office use the same daycare. One shows up even when it snows; the other two call out. The only time their daycare has been closed this winter was for that 27 inch storm a couple of weeks ago (and to be fair, most of the state was closed that day), and the guys in the office called the girls in the office and told them to stay home.

That is bad. If one makes it, then all three should.
