Yeah, I'm not impressed with it. But the boss doesn't seem interested in addressing it, so whatever.

Fortunately our daycare only shuts down when my wife's company does since its in the same building. They also share the same holiday schedule which is convenient

My place only shuts down when the state declares state of emergency.

Essentially the same for the daycare that the girls here use. They also take a week off in August, but it's the same week every year so the girls can plan for it.

Same issue here. I know I have ample insulation in the affected area, just not much of a pitch to the roof in back. I'm thinking the heat wire..or maybe a metal roof if that's possible?

    Grrrrrr

Metal roof FTW. Expensive, but damn worth it. My parents have a metal roof on their house. It's 40 years old, doesn't leak, and they've never had to shovel it. As soon as there's enough snow for it to weigh anything it slides off.

I have taken ice melt, not salt. put it in some pantyhose and place in on end of roof where it meets the gutter every 4 or 6 feet alone roof. worked pretty good for me. you cant toss them up attached to a rope and pull to the edge so you don't need to get up there.
I have since added about 2 feet of insulation in my attic and no issues since

I thought you bought and installed the heat wire this year? I helped my dad set it up on his roof in a section that is prone to ice dams, we'll see how it does.

Metal roofs are possible. Expensive, but possible. I wouldn't mind having a new standing seam roof on my house.

One of the many things still on the to-do list, and now I'm paying for it.

I was thinking even if it's possible to do part of it closest to the edge that way, that would be enough perhaps. I know the 2 rooms in the back have been rehabbed in the past 10 years and insulated.

adding insulation to attice is cheap and easy and itll pay off in heating savings. I used blown in cellulose in my attic, adde like 2 feet of it to the shitty 6 inches of fiberglass that was up there. first winter I saved over a tank of oil (about $800 at the time) and the insulation cost me about $200 and half a days work and 12 beers for me a my biuddy

That's the way an attic should be, cold and well ventilated although you should have a LOT more insulation in the attic floor!

On the metal roof, I'd really just need a couple of feet from the edge metal and then shingle the rest. Is that doable?

When you say "expensive", how much does this run per foot?

it's doable. Expensive is relative, for me I can shingle my own roof but I'd pay someone to do a metal roof correctly so the cost difference would be huge (my labor essentially being free). Metal roofs can have a huge range in price.

My roof is 10 yrs old now, so I'd not be needing the whole job done. I'm just thinking if I did the back 2-3 feet (or whatever is recommended) in metal only.
