Official 2009 Manual Trans (POS) Thread!!

I picked up a 2009 4x4 SR5 MT Access Cab back in May. I LOVE IT!! I love the following:

Color: Black
The fact that it is a Toyota
4x4
The overall Exterior look
The interior too!

What i'm concerned about it the Manual Trans!! IS there anyone else out there who thinks this is a POS?

Here are my issues (I'd like to know if anyone else is having these problems?):

1.) Biggest Problem - while driving over bumps out of gear (In N or clutched in) It sounds like the transmission is going to fall apart! (Like something is loose inside the trans. Took it to a dealer and they said it was "normal drivetrain noise". Test drove a TRD = NO NOISE.
I'm not sure what could be causing this. I know for a fact that it is NOT the brake rattle clips or heat sheilds. It feels like something MAJOR is loose while out of gear and driving over bumps?

2.) Just the overall clunkyness of the trans. Not very smooth (and YES i know how to drive a stick)

3.) Rev ups after clutching in

4.)I need to get up to at least 2700-3000 rpms before i can smoothly shift our of 1st into 2nd

5.) while crawling in 2nd gear after a short period of time (after a let off the gas) i can feel what appears to be the drivetrain/engine unwind and i go a little fater without giving it any gas....Is this normal?

6.)sometime when shifting into 3rd i can hear a clunk, and a slight delay and then the gears catch.

7.) Almost all the time i can hear clunks when shifting from one gear to another...as well as excessive mechanical noise from the stick and linkage.

Starting to think i should have got the auot (allthough they have issues too acording to this site)

I can't even say i get better MPGs

All i can play is the MAN card and cool factor of having a stick...but what is cool about the above problems: NOTHING!!!

Some of you may hate me for this but I have a feeling that the newer models DO NOT have the same quality build as the early Toyota years.....you can say yes they do all you want but the truth is we won't find out for another 20 years

 

The only issue with the autos I know of is the trans lag, sort of a premature downshift @ low speeds a little annoying but nothing compared to what you are describing. I think you are right, you should have got the auto.

 

The auto will downshift into 1st gear when you left off the gas at around 10mph. It causes the appearance of a lag, which is actually just engine pull because the RPM is increases significantly by going into 1st gear. Other than that, the auto transmission is pretty decent.

 

I agree with your report on the taco w/ stick.

I purchased a 2009 Taco w/ the standard transmission, drove it for a couple of weeks and sold it.

Bought the same truck with the auto transmission.

 

How much money did you have to eat on that?

 

It was a $1500 lesson,

Thinking back I drove it for a month before I sold it.

 

Thats what i'm affraid of....not sure what to do....

 

My 2010 does'nt shift nearly as smooth as my 15 yr old 1994 did.I sold that truck to get my 2010.My Tacoma clunks alot when shifting and the RPM's seem to hang to long when you put in the clutch for another gear.

 

My 09 6 speed shifts smooth as silk but i notice the rpms hang up also. more so than my 2000 5 speed

 

I had an '06 manual for a year that I traded on an '08 auto and love it. Could not deal with the manual tranny. It sucked!! There's a thread (couple actually) on this very topic.

I had a '90 Nissan and the manual tranny was great, but the toyota stunk.

 

last week i traded my 08 dc 6 speed in on a 2010 dc auto because of the 6 speed it is a pos i was worried about having trouble with it when it was out of warranty

 

Add me to the list who traded their 6spd for an auto...

Had an 08 6spd and traded for an 09 auto. Experienced all the problems listed by the original poster. Yes the 09 has the tranny lag, but I don't regret making the switch at all.

 

I have an 09 regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7l with the 5 speed and I also have been annoyed with the transmission. The most annoying is how much effort I have to use to get the truck into first if im coasting very slowly, either downshifting from 2nd, or just rolling in neutral. Ive also felt/heard the clunking while going over bumps. The only two gears that I can feel a delay and than the gears catching are while I do the 1-2, or 2-3 shift. Its hard to describe if you haven't felt it, its not really a grind, but you can just hear and feel how unsmooth it is.

Overall, even if there was an auto available in my engine/drive-line configuration, I wouldn't trade in my truck for the auto. Although there are days when I wish I didn't have to row my own, I tend to get bored with automatics.

Plan on changing to synthetic trans fluid at my next service interval to see if it makes a difference.

 

I was dead set on a 6 speed until I test drove one. I noticed many of the problems you mentioned.

Got the Auto and haven't looked back My first auto and I really like it.

 

Try double clutching when down shifting. I know you should not have to do this in a small truck but i used to drive big rigs back when i was a kid and had to do that all the time, I still find myself doing it in my Taco. you need to keep the speed and rpms just right to make it sweet.

 

Well i guess that confirms it...Is there anyone out there who is not having/had these issues?

I don't understand how something like this gets past the "test phase" with Toyota....

Have an '08 6 spd with just over 18k on the clock. I have noticed all the issues you described. I think it is just the nature of this beast...

I cannot remember the name of the thread, but there has been at least one very detailed thread on TO bearing/pilot shaft problems related to the questionable design of these units. Read one of those and you will be real happy about your 6 spd....

Oh well, still better than the alternative....owning an auto

 

That was my experience too.

 

i don't have anything to compare to since my truck is my first manual
it is kinda clunky though... and i hate first gear! its way to high a ratio...
