Soooo, since you have the bigger rack... does the other Tacoma owner have rack envy yet? i also see that you two sport a little extra junk in the trunk too.

Just a few expensive & DIY things...

Put me down as number 2 on this list, for sure! I've loved watching the development and use of this since you started building them, just wishing for a GB one day to afford it....
wife, house, truck, food all seem to cost me money!

Does anyone have specs and install photos for installing the cap rack on Yakima (or Thule) rails?

UPS was not kind to my package and I'm now discovering I am missing some hardware. I am specifically looking for specs for the following:

    1. T-Slot nuts for the Yakima rails

    2. Size and length of the screw for the Yakima rails

    Will these work? - http://www.tnutz.com/product/economy-t-nut-screw/
1/2 inch screws seem too short.

    3. T-slot nuts for the extrusion channels

    4. Size and length of the screw for the recommended extrusion channel nuts

Of course, buying recommendations will be welcome.

    Thanks guys!

I'm sure he would, but we've had an overdose of bad luck on my cap rack (an early long-bed rack) and he's already helped me through a bunch of problems beyond what would be expected. I'm happy to help myself and give the poor guy a break.

I just need data that I can't find searching here or his new site.

For the yakima rails you can use either 15 series or 10 series tnuts, the standard economy version works best. TNUTZ.com has the best prices. MSC direct has the fastest shipping.

If you get the 15 series the standard thread is 5/16-18" and you will want a 5/8" or 3/4" length, I have used both. If you get the 10 series nuts the thread is 1/4"-20 same length of screw.

Tslot nuts for the extrusion channels vary depending on the crossbar. Standard crossbars like you have use the 15 series nut. HD crossbars (black anodized) use the 10 series nut.

The screws for the extrusion bars are going to depend on what you are mounting. Obviously if you are mounting something very thin you will want shorter screw, something thick will require a longer screw. I have found that most things I have mounted (aluminum plate, Pelican case, d-rings from home depot) can be mounted with a 1/2" length screw.

    Hey Zach,
Just wanted to say thanks for getting the DC CabRac out tome asap with the shipping! This rack is awesome, simple, fast, and easy toinstall, even with just one person.

Just wanted to see ifyou have a recommendation for the mounting location of the airdam portion? I'mlooking to achieve the least amount of wind noise when the rack is NOT loaded.

    Thanks again!
    Charlie

Most people have been installing it in the two bottom holes of the four where it can be mounted. I have mine mounted in the middle two holes but had one other customer complain of a whistling when it was mounted there.

Im shocked that people are using the thin t-nut or slot nuts that keep getting posted. I was amazed at how burly my rack is I was disappointed with the mounting hardware that came with it. I don't want to bash Zachs product its the best rack out there in my mind, with all the mounting options out there it would be impossible to predict what hardware customer would need. I had my neighbor machine some aluminum nuts that fit the extrusions perfectly. I would be afraid to mount a box of tools or anything valuable with some of the hardware I have seen being used.

The T slots nuts Zach sends are fine but, since you are clearly an engineer, perhaps you should go to Tnutz.com and get the ones that bring you the greatest happiness and sense of security. I use these ones for ease vice strength...

Like I said Im not bashing Zach's racks I did order 20 of those nuts shown above from t-nuts the ones I got had a little different profile, I wasn't that thrilled with the fit. I plan to put bikes and my roof top tent on my rack, I want to be sure nothing is going to come loose. I sent Zach pictures of what t-nuts I ordered and he said no one had had any problems with them and that it's possible that t-nuts sent me the wrong nuts. Heres a picture of what I had my machinist neighbor make for me. Sorry the picture is so huge. If you are mounting an RTT you shouldn't be using the T slot nuts anyways...the nuts that come with his rack are fine for anything you would ever mount to the slots...gas cans, water jugs, kayaks... but to think that any of the slide in nuts would hold your RTT is a pretty big gamble IMO.

That's the only way I would ever mount an RTT to any rack of any kind...even with the best nuts in the world that lip that retains it and bears the upward force is too thin for an RTT.

Sorry Zach didn't mean for this to get highjacked, I just wanted to show others the cool solution I came up with.
