I'm looking for info on what Toyota will do if your Tacoma frame gets a rust hole after they undercoat it. I bought a 2006 Tacoma that was undercoated by the dealer and want to know my options like time frames . Thanks for your help.

From what I understand, they will replace frames with a complete perforation of the frame, only until March 2016...

If it rots after that....you got a lawn ornament.. (that nobody wants to buy)..!!

    Good luck

they are spraying the frames till march 2016. the undercoating gives you another 15 yrs for rust perforation on the frame. so in the next 15 yrs if it gets a hole you get a new frame. im a tech for Toyota

My rust protection expert at Corrosion Free, does not agree at all. He has seen some trucks that have had it done and after about a year or so, the crap starts to peel off and allows water behind it. The guys that had it done, had him remove the Toyota stuff and apply Corrosion Free.

I have seen a Taco 3 months after being sprayed with that stuff... that's why I declined to have it done...

NOTHING provides rust protection for 15 years....If that were the case, the inventer of that stuff would be the world's richest man..!!!!

Thanks for the info. Is there anything in writing anywhere that states this? I like the truck and would love to keep it going but living in Ma rust will be coming for sure.. Thanks again.

    I'm curious also....

I need to get mine inspected soon. I predict I'll end up with the undercoating. However - there's one soft spot, if you poke at it....I'm pretty sure it'll create a hole. I'm not gonna poke at it to create a hole on purpose. My luck...the hole won't be big enough and they'd still spray over top it anyway.

I guess I just need to let Toyota figure this all out.

I think you misunderstood him... he's not saying the rust won't come back in that 15 years. He's saying Toyota will extend their rust penetration warranty another 15 years and will replace the frame if it continues and perforates in that time period.

Reading between the lines a little: if you DON'T get it done there is no such warranty. So when the existing warranty expires (10 years after mfg date? i don't remember) you're on your own. Get their CRC frame coat and you get up to 25 total years depending on mfg date.

I hope that's true. But even if not, your 'stuff' will be no better than their 'stuff' if not properly maintained. I say that after years of working on aircraft corrosion prevention programs: you have to keep up with inspection and re-treatments. Not even the best most expensive aerospace corrosion prevention compounds work forever. That being the case, I'd much rather let them do it just to get that 15 year frame replacement guarantee.

DO poke at it hard enough to create a hole on purpose! The semi-official test is to bounce a hammer off it for a pass.

It's equally weakened whether softened or there's a hole so it doesn't really matter. If the spot is adjacent to one of the critical areas (suspension attach points, as I recall, is one of the areas) it's unsafe to drive so you should know for your own safety if the frame is severely weakened.

    :D

I think I've read somewhere they look for 2" holes - and send pictures to Toyota for recommendations. Soft spot will get overlooked. :)

It'll be one of those situations where.... the undercoating material will physically hold the 'soft spot' together (kinda like duct tape). LOL The soft spot will rot within (aka hole) and the undercoating will still look new from the outside. By the time that happens, I'll be in a 2016 or 2017 or 2018. :D

Exactly. Around here anyway where they salt the roads in the winter like crazy. I see more early (pre-tacoma) toyota trucks around here than I do pre-01 Tacomas. They're all gone. The frame on my 89 Toyota pickup with 200k on it has a perfectly solid frame and after 2 winters the frame on my first 05 that I bought new looked like part of the titanic. That one must have got a new frame by now.

No, there is nothing in writing giving you another 15 yrs warranty on the frame...... are you kidding me...NO company will EVER do that...

What Toyota gives you is a spray of their ineffective crap and wave as you leave...(watch for the middle finger)...NO warranty...

The truth.... please prove me wrong.... PLEASE..!!!!!!

I spent the first 2 winters with my 2010 in Pennsylvania the frame looks fine.

Along with washing off the entire exterior of the track weekly when ever it got above freezing. I made a pvc ladder frame with lots of holes drilled in it and attached a garden hose, which I slide ladder frame under the truck and let it wash off the salt after the exterior wash.

    Stock for now...
I'm at the same point - I want it proven that if they are allowed to put this crap on the frame and it still rusts out they will make it right - in my opinion if their coating doesn't do the job and frame goes south it's their fault , not mine .
I'd have to see this in writing and even then it's just a piece of stiff toilet paper ...

Sorry as of 2012 I am living in Florida, had no need for that device here.

I started with a device like this: http://mechanicinacan.com/undercarriage-washer/
But quickly realized that I could just make a ladder frame and not have to stand out in the cold.

    That's smart with the pvc
    sprinkler system.

I was thinking about doing the same with pvc and a few 360 degree sprinkler heads.
