I've been waiting, like everyone else, for the remedy on the rear leaf spring recall #E12.

Well today, my right rear leaf spring broke on the Highway, 1 hour from home.

I phoned Toyota and they told me to go ahead and get it repaired and I'll be reimbursed when the remedy is complete.

When I asked the lady, if I'll still be reimbursed if I go with the 4 leaf pack, she replied the remedy will be either the 3 or 4 leaf pack.

Should I go ahead with the 4 leaf pack? Is it better / worse for ride and hauling?

Anyone convert from the 3 leaf pack to 4 leaf pack and like it better or hate it?

I have a 2008 DC SR5 TRD with the factory 3 leaf pack in it now.

Thanks guys.

I'm really surprised they're offering a choice....

I would definitely get the 4 leaf (if you tow & haul).

If the 3 leafs are anything like the old ones, they bottom out too easily.
However....
Knowing the current 3 & 4 leafs are prone to breaking - it's very hard to give you feedback on something that'll be completely new. That is...they should be completely new (design/quality).

Just make sure you're getting the newly designed leaf springs and not some old inventory of the old crap. LOL

get the 4 leaf.

There is a reason toyota, since the end of october 2013, has not produced a 6 lug tacoma with anything but the 4 leaf pack.

4 pack. Indefinitely. Be aware though, even if you get the 4 pack, you may still experience axle wrap. I know even when I was brand new I could hear the axle wrapping so much before I added the AAL. Then it subsided and handling and stability improved.

This right here. Though I can't see a leaf spring design being any different then older ones just because they are still leaf springs, unless they changed their spring rate.

I got mine as a 12 with a 4 leaf back when I bought it. I'm glad it did come with it, as I am now running 7 leafs with an AAL instead of the usual 6 for those who have the OR 3 pack.

4 leaf should actually provide a much better ride then the standard 3 leaf. As there is one entire leaf spring additional now to absorb the road and handle better.

Holy crap!

I would not drive that out of the driveway. If that sucker lets go at highway speed, it isn't going to be pretty at all.

Good advice, when mine broke on the passenger side, it came real close to severing the brake line. I put evey hose clamp in my tool box on it and drove it home. It probably broke long before it made any noise. I'd recommend if anybody hears anything unusual from their rear suspension to check it out. I asked the metalurgist at work and he said it sounds like they tempered the steel incorectly.

It wouldn't be so bad except that is the Main Spring that is bent, not just one in the leaf pack. Spring steel shouldn't bend that way, I am surprised that it hasn't snapped already.

Mine is a 2011 Sport and came with the 3 leaf pack. I had to get the TSB.

See above.

Yes. The fact that it is the main spring is what concerns me too. It's actually been like that for a while, and what's worse is that I actually noticed it a while back. Well, I noticed the helper spring sticking out...I didn't notice how bent the main leaf was. I tried calling Toyota yesterday, but everything around here was shut down with a few millimeters of ice. Yes...millimeters...Texas.

This makes me want to check my springs before I leave work today. I heard a strange kind of thump when driving yesterday. I just figured it was all in my head. (still could be, but it wouldn't hurt to check)

hmm. I have a TRD OR that I just had the frame replaced, and new read leaf springs. The new leaf pack looks to have 3 leafs plus an overload leaf? Is that the 4 leaf pack?
