Dealership says my 2010 v6 Tacoma takes 5 1/2 quarts of oil, my owners manual says 4.8 qts. Who am I to believe - and why?

A v-6 uses 5.5 qrts. with a filter change. Never change your oil without doing the filter... that's retarded

hes confused about the 2wd and prerunner. yes a prerunner is 2wd, but the pre runner is with the 4wd and not 2wd.

not all v6's are 5.5. the x-runner has a shallower oil pan so it gets the 4.8qts and not 5.5

One more wrinkle to make it more interesting. My truck takes exactly one jug of Mobil One Synthtetic to be dead on/hair under the top dimple on the dipstick. An extra 1/2 quart (for me) is overfilling it. Check your dipstick.

Start your engine and let it run for a minute after filling the oil. Then check the dipstick. It takes about 1/2 quart to fill up the oil filter. 5.5 quarts.

I'd be thinking my dipstick was reading wrong than. I wouldn't think your trucks' oil capacity would be a 1/2qt out of spec some how. Seems like a lot.

he knows that. he was giving an example of a v6 that doesn't take 5.5 qt.

yes i know. its the only 2wd (that is 5 lug not 6 lug like the prerunner) that has the v6.

The OP got the 4.8qts needed from the 2wd listing. even tho he has a prerunner and is 2wd, he doesnt need to go by that since the next listing has 4wd and pre runner which needs 5.5 qts

I'm with you, but I've tried so many different variables:

    With 5.5 quarts
    1. Hot oil, drain overnight and fill in morning (not a daily driver so no biggie) = slightly over top dimple.
    2. Hot oil, drain for two-four hours = slightly over top dimple.
    3. Hot oil, drain for 30 minutes = over top dimple

First three were with OEM oil plug, Fumoto did not seem to make a difference when I added it. Truck has only ever had the Toyota OEM sponge media filters, that may be the variable.

I now change oil in the 30 minute range and use one jug of Mobil One Synthetic and it is almost always dead on the top dimple or slightly under. Also don't have a half quart of opened oil sitting around (that extra quart was also the most expensive).

This may sound weird, but maybe not. 5.5 quarts always felt sluggish right after the oil change. One jug feels like I did something. Truck is not run too hard, has 19,000 miles now and oil is almost always a nice slightly darker honey color when changed.

I'm stumped too. Only thing I can think of is residual oil in the block. Oil looked cleaner with overnight draining but not enough to make me do it every time. Can someone change their oil, add just the jug of Mobil One, and see where it sits on the dipstick?

pff.... fuck the wait, drain the bitch, grease zerk fittings on driveshafts while she dains, plug her back up 3-5min later while your still under the truck, n fill her up.... the 2 oz of oil your going to get out by letting it sit overnight is nill.

Agreed, that is why the whole process with greasing the zerks is at 30 minutes now. Just trying to figure out why my truck likes 5 quarts.

5 quarts put me a little below the dimple. Maybe 3/4 from the bottom dimple.

Truck was hot. Let drain awhile I rotated the tires. Wasn't low enough for me to open an quart

Let me revive near month old thread. 5 quarts puts me 1/4 over from bottom dimple. Check in morning when cold and still @ same level.

Between the dimples in good for me. Below and over = problem.

Has anyone fitted the drain plug with a quick valve? If so can you recommend?
