We use them a lot in Mexico, also when we go up in the mountains. Easier and more reliable than cellphone.

That is a good "handheld" unit. One thing you may consider is an external speaker as the output volume is fairly low. If you have your windows down or your music is up loud you may have a hard time to hearing it. Other than that this is actually a nice unit to have. It takes up little room as there is not much to mount. It will have to be hard wired in or you'll have to wire a 12 volt plug to it. Make sure that you get a good antenna. Wilson's are very dependable and have been tried and tested throughout the trucker and HAM community. One of the most important things you will need to do is to have the SWR's set. Best option is to have a CB shop do this for you. Should cost but $20 to have this done. It will allow you to have the best possible transmission and a clear signal. You will also have to buy a antenna wire as it does not come with any. Make sure you buy it in 3 ft lengths. So if you need 5 feet of wire buy 6 feet. And do not coil the extra length in a circle, route it around somewhere in the truck. All of this will effect your signal. Here is a pic of what you will get with this purchase...

Here is another option that you may like. This also is used in the same way as the one you mentioned but has extra features the one does not. This one you can plug directly into a 12 volt socket as it comes already wired for it. Also it comes with a rechargeable battery compartment (using 6 AA rechargeable batteries) and an antenna. This makes this a dual purpose unit as it now becomes a handheld unit. This unit will need all the aforementioned parts as the other unit, truck antenna, antenna wire, SWR's calibrated, ect. The only down fall of this unit is that if you do decide to use an external speaker for inside your truck, it must plug into the handheld unit unlike the Cobra we the external speaker plugs into the secondary box. This unit is also a little less expensive. IMO this is the better of the two units with the additional usage and accessories you receive with the Midland. With that said either unit would be a great buy if setup correctly. You wouldn't be disappointed.

If you don't know the "trucker lingo", most trucker won't talk to you. But you can leave it on CH 19 to hear what they are saying. They will report on where cops are on the road, if there is construction or an accident slowing down traffic. Also you get the NOAA channels so you can see what you are in for as you travel. Another good thing to have these for is if you become stranded, broke down or stuck somewhere you can reach out with these and get help. Someone will hear you and be able to get or provide help.

LOL, TV guide?! Ch 19 is the main trucker channel and Ch 9 is the emergency channel. Besides those, the others are just used for guys traveling together that don't want to hear all the other noise of Ch 19.

They all do the same thing. Some of them just have more options than others. What you are looking at will work just fine for the truck. The larger "box" units can be modified to do extra things and have additional power. Although 4 watts is the legal limit to run with out a HAM licence.
