Well, I'm disappointed by the new '16 simply because I think that after TEN years, Toyota could have done so much better. To me, rather than a "new gen", the '16 is just a major re-design of the gen 2. I like a lot of what I see in the '16, but I can't help but think it could have been so much better if they had dipped a little deeper into the corporate parts bin.

They hit the target, but in the 5 or 6 ring, rather than the bullseye.

At this point, I'm really happy we sold our '06 Taco last year and bought a new 2014 4Runner instead of waiting for the new Tacoma. Turns out that was a good decision.

    BTW- I hate the tan.

Don't lie to yourself there are more carryover parts then just the 2.7. Which to me isn't a problem and I like what they have done but this all new thing just isn't 100% truth.

The direct injection system concerns me. While it is a great system it is plagued with problems. Toyota has addressed this by adding port injectors to help with the carbon build up. Having issues with trouble codes. But there is still the issue of the low tension piston rings. You have got to change the oil every 3k on these direct injected cars/trucks.

This, engine runs hotter, etc. Makes you wonder if they will be as every bit reliable and maintainence free as previous engines. I'll keep my trusty 4.0L.

They will not, and it does not take wizard to see this.
That 3.5 L firect injection is already problematic in the cars. Carbon buildup is one thing, head gaskets are another. Leaking oil all over the place is yet another.
with Atkinson cycle and direct injection that engine will have so much carbon buildup in the truck that is not funny. Maybe people in Cali or Arizona will not see this as bad because warm temperatures but everybody north of i80 are going to suffer.

I don't think this is true. I think the people who are unhappy about the 2016 are unhappy because they *like* Toyota generally and really wanted to like the new truck.

I count myself in this category. Since I was a kid, Toyota always made the best mid-sized trucks on the market. I have always liked them, and the 2008 I owned was great. I am bummed because I think the 2016 is just a half-assed update to the truck I sold years ago. The exterior and interior both have hodgepodge, patchwork qualities about them, and after all these years, the upgrades do not appear to be very significant. Toyota trucks were legendary, and the "Gen 3" does not feel particularly worthy of legend status.

Favoring a company doesn't mean supporting everything that company does. People who like the company may actually be more vocal when they think that company has made a mistake.

I like how the majority of commenters in this thread know everything about the new Tacoma and haven't even driven it yet or spent any real time around it.

I think we all need to wait until it actually comes out before we label it a "half ass update".

    This^

    And this^

Listen, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are so many "negative nellies" just because Toyota didn't do exactly what they think the new Tacoma should be. At the end of the day, if anyone doesn't like the new Tacoma, they should just go buy something else.

Yeah, you're right. All we know is:

    - It shares the same basic platform and cab with the 10 year old Gen 2

    - Frame is upgraded with high strength steel, but is unlikely to significantly differ from the old frame.

    - Not one thing about the truck has been mentioned as class leading or innovative. Except the $2 GoPro mount.

    - Exterior looks like a collection of borrowed and contradictory styling themes.

    - Interior is a complete jumble of random crap.

The point was just that people who don't like the truck are not "Toyota haters" any more than people who do like the truck are "Toyota fanbois". Those terms are just annoying and usually inaccurate.

I really like the exterior design of the new Tacoma and interior. But overall I was really hoping toyota would carry over the 1GRFE from the 4runner and add the d4 injection to it. But also Carry over the regular 1GRFE for a couple years to allow the Trucks issues to be worked out.
