Yellow Fog Frustration

Hey Guys, I've gone through several pairs of Nokyas, and I just blew one yesterday. I absolutely love having the 2500k illumination, especially during these winter months. It appears to me that the bulbs just have a poor fit and allow for moisture penetration, and and ugly fog light when off. Which leads me to considering the other options; coloring the glass.

Can some of you guys talk about the pros and cons of your method of changing the color of your glass, whether its a film, paint, etc. Has it faded, cracked? I like the idea of the fogs being yellow while off too.

ALSO!!!! What bulbs are you using? I have Silverstars in my HL's, which look great with the warmer fog light, but are a bit on the cool side when used without fogs. I'm particularly interested in Silverstars in fogs, with colored lens'.

Can't comment on the fogs, but I hope that's not someone else's private property that you're tearing up.

 

Have you looked into Lamin-X film for the fogs? Super easy to install - especially for fog lense applications.

I have, I'm wondering about the quality of light output with them installed, specifically with a cooler/whiter bulb, i.e. Silverstars.

 

did you happen to change the o-ring on the bulbs from the original to the nokya?

 

If you use a cooler color bulb with yellow lamin-X, the light starts to turn green. If you use yellow lamin-x, stick to normal bulbs. Another option is to tint the lens with Krylon tint. I don't remember the exact name of it, but it's a Krylon product used to tint glass or clear plastic, similar to VHT Nightshades, just in different colors instead of black. Just prep, spray a few coats to your desired tint, clear coat and you're done. Looks great and holds up well.

It comes in Red, Blue, Yellow, and maybe more. It's a 6oz can. I haven't had any luck finding a can of it in my area, only online. At a current price of $60+/can? Definitely not worth it when film is going to be around $6-7 for enough to cover it a couple of times.

 

If you thought Nokya's were a nice yellow, then you should try Optilux. They are a darker yellow so the yellow color is more pronounced and noticeable. Be sure you get the 42 watt bulbs and not the 55w or 65w bulbs!

As for poor fit, in my experience with both Nokya and Optilux, I found that the rubber ring around the base of the bulb is too big. Perhaps that's what's giving your issues? From reading threads here on TW, I ended up taking the rubber rings from the stock bulbs and putting them on the yellow bulbs. It fits perfect and makes installation a lot easier.

As for headlights, I used Philips MotoVision until they burned out. Currently I'm using Piaa Super Plasma GT bulbs. Both looked great with the yellow Optilux headlight bulbs.

If you want the foglights to be yellow while off, browse ebay for 'yellow Tacoma foglights' and you'll probably find some with yellow glass.

Been in the truck for 2 years now. Still going strong. Much more yellow than the pic shows. Kinda pricey...but worth it IMO.
