Disappointed with Toyota

Things I really wanted to see were rear disc brakes, a fully boxed frame, and a metal bed. Toyota didn't address any of these issues. Not having rear disc brakes on a 2016 model is a joke. Toyota will now be the only truck with drum brakes?

The GMC Canyon may or may not be as dependable as a Tacoma, but it does have everything a new redesigned truck should have. I waited till Toyota announced their new truck before I made my decision, but after seeing it I'm going GMC.

 

Well done Toyota. It's going to sell like hot cakes.

 

I prefer rear drum brakes on a truck, and the ones they put on the Tacoma are bulletproof and last forever.

The composite bed is brilliant. I'm really happy that they kept it alive.

As far as a fully boxed frame.......meh, doesn't effect me. It's a mid size truck, I'm not hauling boulders around or jumping ravines.

 

I don't see how you can have such a strong opinion yet without even actually seeing one of the 2016s? So far it's all just auto writers and internet forum clowns. I'd wait to actually see and drive one of the Gen3s before making my mind up like this...

I pulled the covers off my drums at around 70k and they still have tons of meat on the pads. The truck was dealer maintained by the previous owner and I see no record of back brakes being done. I expect they're original.

The front pads are going to need replacement in the spring, though. Rotors are also feeling not so great when I hit the brakes at highway speeds. I guess I can't complain about the 75k that will be on them by then.

Discs are easy, yes, but the drums are kind of nice in that it's going to be a long time before I have to touch them.

 

If the composite bed is soooo good why aren't they using it in the Tundra? Why is it that no other truck maker is coping it?

Disc brakes are now the standard in all cars and trucks, so its absurd that they wouldn't put them in a redesigned Tacoma.

 

Maybe it doesn't work as well over a wider span. Beats me, all I know is that I love it in the Tacoma.

The braking in the Tacoma is excellent. There's even a thread on this site about how it's too good. What benefits do you expect to gain with disc brakes in the rear?

 

My only disappointment is not being able to have one yet.

 

I thought it was supposed to be an Otto/Atkinson hybrid? It should be able to switch over almost instantly between the two.

 

No offense this is probably the stupidest Pro for drum brakes.

In properly configured vehicle your rear brakes should wear out as fast as your front brakes. If they not than you breaking with the front and not even at four wheels. Since most cars never adjust this and newer cars dont even have adjustement for it (Tacoma) that is what happens.

In old cars with proportioning valve you would take car after brake job and hammer brakes until all 4 wheels lock. If front was locking before rear you adjusted brake force to go more to the rear, until all 4 would lock at the same time.
If you maintain your car properly all 4 brakes will wear out evenly.

 

No. Front brakes do more work than back brakes. Always.

In addition, the rear ends of our trucks are way too light to ever gain any braking performance from disc brakes.

Drums are absolutely the way to go for the Tacoma.

Our trucks brake extremely well, and the rears last beyond 100,000 miles. What's the problem????

 

Yeah thats why they are bigger.
Thats why there is proportioning valve
thats why when they setup correctly they wear evenly because you using maximum braking on the rear as well as the front, especially in rear wheel drive vehicle.

 

I don't see how rear/front/all wheel drive has anything to do with it. When you're stopping, weight shifts to the front. That's why the front needs to do more. If anything, the back does even less in a pickup because there is less weight in the rear to begin with.

I have never ever had a vehicle wear the front and rear brakes at the same rate...discs or drums.

 

Why do you not like your composite bed lets hear it? If it's such a deal breaker go trade your taco in for a Colorado. I hear they have metal beds. And a boxed frame? Please fill us in on why you need a boxed frame. This could spark the whole "if you're going tow with a Tacoma" debate. Once again midsized truck. Disk brakes? Please tell me why you need disk brakes?

 

Maybe the Taco is being confused with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo??

 

Ok how many vehicles you had and at what interval you adjusted your proportioning valve ? (Crickets chirping in the background)

 

I thought I read that somewhere as well.

Toyota is already doing this with some of their engines, so hopefully the Tacoma gets the same technology.
