Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
This. Average person wanted more cushy ride. Box frame was changed to semi boxed.

Also bottom dollar, and crash safety had a part.

No the frame is not as good or as strong as a 79-95 Toyota that had a fully boxed frame. But its not like old-2005 ish American non boxed c channel frame that sucked.

I have loaded and used the shit out of my truck. The frame has not bent or broke, however it does flex and wiggle considerably more than an old Toyota would have.

1st gen Tacoma is not a fully boxed frame either. I think they called it 3/4 boxed.

I would have loved a fully boxed frame. Rear disks I don't really care about, and the composite bed takes a beating! I actually like it. I do wish it was updated to be a little wider inside like a metal bed.

The only thing 2gen has over the 1gen is V6 Engine and transmission. Everything else is either worse or the same.
Crap look at the TRD offroad which is using 1gen locker and differential.
So what is that you think 2gen truck has better than 1gen Tacoma except engine and transmission?

Hence why I stated the Tacoma didn't need a fully boxed frame  The average joe that gets to point A and point B in his Tacoma and throws weight in the bed occasionally and uses the truck as a medium duty truck they will be fine. If you tow or haul heavy weight in the bed often maybe you should opt for a full size truck.

I promise I'm harder on my truck than many other folks on this forum and have not had a problem with a Tacoma frame in the last two that I've owned.

The biggest thing to me is the roomier, more plush interior.

Also, more room in the bed. Higher towing capacity is nice as well.

    Looks nicer too.

Okay so the 2nd gen Tacoma doesn't have a better interior, more power, more towing, roomier, more options? what's worse on a 2nd gen than a 1st gen? I'm really interested in hearing this one.

So let me break it down.

    • Better engine
    • better trans (except manual never owned one and don't know what I'm talking about)
    • better towing capability
    • bigger
    • more roomy
    • Interior
    • Exterior
    • More options
If the locker is the only thing you can bring up tell me why it's no good. Seems to work fine for me. I run 285's haven't had a problem yet? For what the average person will do with the truck it's more than enough.

    Lets be real here bro.

Seats are better, and front diff is better.

4cyl is better, although close.. and 4cyl manual trans is better.

    Otherwise, I agree.

You must have some different Average Joe over there.
Average joe does not need full size truck because its not running construction business, but bringing bed full of sand couple times a year, tossing ATV on the back, or a pallet of concrete or a bed full of wood is what "average homeowner joe" does with the pickup. If average joe does not need to do this than Average joe does not need a pickup. There are minivans and Ford Escape SUV for those "average joe's" with out a need to load truck.
Fk if all you need is carry a Canoe than get a Santa Fe or Rav4 or Crv.

Higher towing capacity is really a hoax. They both tow about the same, the power is the reason it is improved for gen 2.

2nd gen bed is tougher but smaller in every dimension. Measured the inside myself.

Seats are better? I had both at the same time I never found seats to be any better. It was the same foam in them.
Front diff ? maybe going from 7.5 to 8 is better but goign from 4 pinion to 2 pinion carrier is not better. (look for bushing replacement due to vibes)

I will agree with the vibes but if you don't have issues as many people don't it's an improvement.

What is your point I'm trying to argue that the Tacoma does this very well without a boxed frame and is an improvement over the first gen. I love my truck. If your truck can't handle what you are doing with it get a bigger truck.

It's that simple. Your first argument was all for a boxed frame than. Later saying that if you don't need it you should drive a ridgeline. Mine does all the things you describe with no issues. I stated I wheel the shit out of my truck and haul heavy shit. No probs for me. I'm not the average Joe I abuse the truck and it still works. That's why I drive a Tacoma in the first place.

Okay so a higher towing capacity is an improvement right?

The walls in the bed are higher. improving functionality.

they both have pros and cons. but there isn't much that is definitively better about the 2nd gen.

Yeah, I think over all the 8 is better. How much idk.

And seats, that is purely personal bias. I think 85-95 sr5 seats are the best.

I concur. A long-bed 3rd Gen could haul (and tow) more tacos on a Tuesday.

I'm hungry for tacos now. Tacos rule.

I know that it would be a cold day in hell before I switched back to a 1st gen....

That thing was way too small inside, and not enough balls on the outside.

    2nd gen > 1st gen

3rd gen > THE WORLD (Buwahahahahahahahahahaaa)
