    K...

So I guess the 3rd gen is really the 1st gen's only competition...

    Adjustment?

Never. In all cases, they have been discs. The caliper/piston adjusts automatically as the pad wears.

You have yet to prove that they wear at the same rate. I have found plenty of sources agreeing with me, and not a single one agreeing with you. Your argument does not even make sense, frankly.

And I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why rear discs are so superior to drums. The question has been asked a bunch in this thread, yet no one has chimed in.

3rd gen> 2nd gen = 1st gen this seems to be the consensus around here.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    • Better engine - We establish that, its bigger engine hence is better.
    • better trans (except manual never owned one and don't know what I'm talking about) - LandCruiser Transmission better
    • better towing capability - Comes with bigger engine we establish there
    • bigger - Yeah and it sucks on the trails compare to first gen. but bigger should give you much more payload and much more towing if its going to be full size like it should perform like full size
    • more roomy - Who cares about truck being roomy, its a truck. My Sequoia is roomy.
    • Interior - Its different, not better not worst different
    • Exterior - Really like what ?
    • More options - Why would I need options not related to performance in the truck. Its not a Minivan where I want to decide between rear entertainment system and location of cup holders.

    1gen better

    • Boxed frame - less flex you can load more with out bed hitting the cab on the bumps on forest trail.

    • Manual transfer case - do I even have to spell out.

    • Manual hubs - again do I even have to explain why

    • No drive by wire crap - flooding first gen required only draining water from the cab and engine. No million computers to burn, if main ignition failed due to some miracle, limp mode would get you out of the woods anyway

    • Better wheel bearings -
    • Less weight
    • Better mileage
    • Ability to run 33 inch tires with no lift and no cutting into cab mounts
    • better turning radius
    • better fit in tight trails.
    • Better approach and departure angles stock.
    • Metal bumper on the front.
    • better tacked underside with better clearance (example no stupid exhaust pipe going under frame.
    • greasable drive shaft (zerks not only in the ujoints but yoke too)
    • Double cardan Drive shaft to not have stupid vibes.
    • etc etc etc

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Higher towing capacity on paper. I tow in the real world and they tow about the same except the 4.0 v6 is a little bit faster.

The 6spd is awesome for towing SOOO that's an automatic win.

So in other words it's better.

Only thing I can see is the ease of maintenance. Cost certainly isn't it, wear certainly isn't either, and as you've mentioned the stopping performance is better than any other midsize truck even with the drums: http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2012/01/2012-midsize-shootout-track-day.html

EDIT: Older article, but if I recall correctly the new GMs still don't stop better than the Tacoma. I'll try to find a source when I have more time.

2nd gens were first made in 08/04. Designed even earlier. So its more like a 12 year old platform.

Dude I totally agree.... YOU'RE RIGHT... BUT THE AVERAGE JOE... the Average joe doesn't give 2 shits about:

    Better wheel bearings -
    Less weight
Ability to run 33 inch tires with no lift and no cutting into cab mounts
    better fit in tight trails.
Better approach and departure angles stock.
    Metal bumper on the front.
better tacked underside with better clearance (example no stupid exhaust pipe going under frame.
    etc etc etc

You are stating things that only people who are considering moderately wheeling the truck will care about.

We definitely do. I totally agree with what you just stated. But do you really think that most guys that bought a Tacoma take this into consideration. the answer is NO. The Items I listed are for what was improved from a 1st gen that is daily driven compared to a 2nd gen

I bought my truck to wheel it. YES if you are going to build a dedicated truck a 1st gen is the way to go. BUT, the 2nd gen Tacoma is a better truck all around truck than the 1st gen.

Case in point: The 2nd gen Tacoma does not need a boxed frame. It does fine with out it. WTF are you loading in the bed to take on the trail that it caused the bed to make contact with the cab. I haven't heard the first complaint about that one...

The 2nd gen Tacoma is an overall improvement over the 1st gen.

    In some respects.

1st gen stock for stock was more stable. The springs in my 2012 were not happy towing.

Both trucks need trailer brakes when towing heavy. 2nd gen is wired for them. 1st gen dash lends better to the brake controller itself.

The power difference is minimal with the added size and weight of gen2.

Auto trans tow almost exactly the same between the two. No winner.

Manual trans gen 2 is clear winner.

So the 2nd gen is an improvement over the 1st gen? I'm pretty sure the power from a my 2nd gen is huge improvement over the first.

On paper it is a larger number. But by the time your towing its barely noticeable from v6 auto to v6 auto.

Yes there are improvements and there are compromises there are better things about both. Depending on the use you pick for your reason a 1st or 2nd gen could be the better truck.

2nd is better for average driver but that doesn't make it better overall.

I prefer my 2nd gen. For me it is a better truck mainly because I like the looks and the seats and room are more comfortable for me. If it was a toy I would prefer a 1st gen. But the 1st gen as a truck isn't any worse over all if I had a different use or maybe was a smaller guy I would say the 1st was better.

they are both reliable and very comparable for performance. The real difference is the fit, whatever fits you better is the better truck.

I had to Google it...holy crap. Points for obscure; double points for outrageously expensive.

To hell with the speakers. They should make complete interiors.
