Timing cover leaking?

Has anyone experience a timing cover leaking? I see oil residue from the passenger side, close to the powersteering pump. i thought at first it was the p/s pump and i think its the timing cover.
Its a 06 taco v6 with 50k miles on it

I had a 2005 4runner that the dealership told me the front cover was leaking on. I cleaned it with safe-&-easy degreaser and it never came back. The motor was only greasy on that one side and I never figured out why. Luckily I cleaned it and it never came back. They wanted 1200 dollars to replace that cover.... Good luck!

 

My buddy had this problem in his 05 and he took it to the dealer and they fixed it no charge.

 

i took my truck in. found out it was the timing cover leaking. toyota is going to fix it no charge. it has a 5year/60kmiles factory warranty for powertrain. so i got a lucky on that. so just a heads up taco lovers. take a look to see if your truck is leaking! only takes a second.

Shoot, thanks to this thread (and my continuing addiction to TW and the Taco) I checked my '06 for the TSB oil leak. And there it was. It is not bad, but it is there. I am still under the powertrain warranty, so I will pursue this when I can give the truck up for a few days

Took mine to the dealer Sat for this problem. I have an 09 with just under 20 thousand. Anybody else have this done on their 09?
Dealer said wasnt a problem and they would take care of it for me.
We cleaned the area good,( right behinde the dipstick under the valve cover). Gonna give it a few weeks to make sure it really is leaking. Any info? thanks...

 

I definitely have the leak in my '06. Strange they would not have dealt with this problem in the three years. They said I would have to bring it in and have them check it. If they agree, it is covered. If they find nothing, they have to charge a $200 diagnostic fee. The leak is there and it is covered for my out-of-warrantee Taco. It is however, covered under the 60,000 mile drivetrain warrantee. Gotta love the service. Toyota stands behind the product!!

 

I have the leak as well on my 06 DC Sport w/53k. Noticed it when installing a new battery. Glad to know there's a TSB for it.

 

my 06 is in the shop today getting done only has 30,000 k on it .
they say at least 2 days .
i hope everyone is checking this , it seems pretty wide spread to me .

 

The TSB says the problem that caused so many to leak was fixed on the production line in the '08 model. Your '09 should not have that problem. You might have something different like a valve cover leak.

 

Any Canadians out there get this dealt with? I haven't checked with my dealer yet but I can guess what the answer will be. It always seems, even if I find something like this that is being addressed in the states, that it doesn't apply to us Canadians. I'm going to check with them but was curious to know ahead of time if there's going to be an issue or not.

Mine's leaking pretty bad (05 AC TRD OR 4x4) and of course would like to get it dealt with.

I just checked the club toyota site and it shows nothign for my truck. But it also shows nothing for the gas pedal recall too so I don't put much faith in what their site's telling me as my truck definatley falls in the middle of that issue.

 

I AM in Canada mine is in the shop today .......no problems at all here .
i told them it was leaking ....they took a look ...booked me in for the fix .

if they had to say it was not leaking .......THEN THEIR WOULD HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM !

 

So yours is still warranty?

I won't have that luxury.

 

YES mine is warranty .......i would not have noticed it without checking
the forums from time to time ......also how i found the power steering pump leak !

if your are out of warranty ask them to go 50/50 bring in a copy of the TSB .
worse can happen is they say no .

Will they still cover this if i have a nst crank pulley?

 

Mine is too & I have the 4 cyl. It's right where the head,timing cover & block meet on the passenger side. It's more of an ooze but still almost starts to drip by oil change time. It is NOT the oil pressure sensor, it is NOT the from taking the filter off even though those 2 things are up on the passenger side of the block. I have no TSB for the 4 cyl BUT...I have a 100k drivetrain warranty & am at 70k so they WILL be dealing with it whenever I decide to take it in.

 

That's why they have a 60K powertrain warranty. So let me get this stright, you didn't bother to notice it while in warranty and that's Toyota's problem? Or if you bought it used, long out of warranty and that's Toyota's fault?

 

easy fix. the powersteering pump is what pushes out the timing cover to make it leak. all that is done is ground down the PS pump where the bolts go threw to make it fit in its mount with out pushing the timing cover forward to make it leak. hell when i swapped engines i had to do this just to ge tthe power steering pump to fit onto the new engine. did it with out removing any of the power steering lines and took all of 5 mins to do

 

I just read that the problem doesn't stop at 05 - 07 4.0s...it is also on 2010 models...

Yes of course this is Toyota's fault...are you kidding me? It is a manufacturer defect, and therefore, warranty or no warranty they should be covering this. This is not a laughing matter, it will cost each of us $1,500 to fix. Do not support them with this...you're only hurting yourself. Your engine will not be the only thing leaking, so will your wallet.

If this was a just a few engines (e.g. 1000 trucks) with this problem, I'd say...eh that sucks...

This is EVERY SINGLE 4.0 MADE FOR THE TACOMA. Millions of Tacomas on the road with this problem. It is TOYOTA'S FAULT, plain and simple. They are responsible to fix this.
